CHALET BEACH – In the last week or so, areas of the Lake Winnipeg South Basin lost as much as two to three inches of ice cover thanks to above-average and, on some days, record-breaking warm temperatures.

Many people in Gimli and surrounding areas found themselves wondering this week if beach weather was right around the corner. Ice fishers, meanwhile, monitored weather conditions carefully during the warm spell; at times doubting whether it was safe to be out on the ice at all.

In an interview with the Spectator this morning, Arnold Weidl, of the Manitoba Ice Fishing Association, spoke of the importance of assessing safety conditions before venturing out onto the lake.

“We’ve been cautioning people when they go out onto the lake,” Weidl said. “As of right now, it’s dicey.”

Weidl added many of his fellow ice fishers have been wary of taking their vehicles, especially, out on the ice lately. He said the front end of his friend’s truck sank into about a foot or so of ice near Winnipeg Beach recently. In many spots, patches of ice will be layered with water in between the packed snow cover right now, Weidl noted.

Meanwhile, this morning at about 10 a.m., a truck went through the ice about two miles from shore near Beaconia Beach in the Balsam Bay area. There were two occupants in the vehicle at the time.

Both men, who were the occupants of the vehicle, have now been located alive. They have been identified as a 51-year-old Winnipeg resident and a 54-year-old Grand Point, Man. resident.

The 54-year-old was located on Lake Winnipeg by a team with Search and Rescue Manitoba. His condition is unknown. The 51-year-old walked back to a local residence. Both men are currently being transported for medical attention.

RCMP thanked all those involved in the swift recovery.

The pair were on their way to go fishing when their vehicle broke through the ice.

Weidl said the ice is about 16 in. thick around Breezy Point and Chalet Beach right now, and 14 in. thick around Gimi and Winnipeg Beach. In an average winter, during peak ice-fishing season at the end of January, the ice could be 30 to 40 in. thick.

Frigid, blustery conditions descended on Lake Winnipeg today.

In Gimli tonight, Environment Canada forecasts periods of light snow ending overnight then clearing. North winds at 40 km/h, gusting to 60, are expected. Low -24 C and -36 C with the wind chill. Tomorrow, expect sunny conditions with 30 km/h north winds near noon, and then turning light in the evening. High -16 C. Wind chill -34 C.

“We’re in for cold snap,” observed Weidl. “So we expect to gain three to four inches rapidly. Then (the ice) will be safe again.”

Ice fishing can be fun. Erect a shelter of some sort and spend the day fishing for trout, walleye, bass, perch, burbot and any other finned creature available in Columbia Basin waters.

Back in the Midwest, where the temperatures drop to well below zero for long periods of time, entire villages of ice huts spring up. Anglers spend days, if not weeks, in these villages. The more elaborate ones have plowed and named streets.

The huts are as fancy as the owner’s imagination and depth of pocketbook allow.

Although it is possible to safely ice fish in the Basin, the ice doesn’t get thick enough to satisfy us. Dennis note: The only time I felt safe on ice while fishing was during a trip to Canada. The ice was 2- to 3-feet thick and we reached the ice huts in vehicles. It was a wonderful experience and a lot of fun. If the ice reached a depth of at least 12 inches of around here, we would be on the ice with the rest of the anglers.

Local lakes and ponds are beginning to freeze with the current cold weather. Fish and wildlife doesn’t measure ice on lakes, so anglers are on their own. However, they offer some tips to consider when heading out for an ice-fishing trip: Don’t fish alone. Let others know exactly where you and your fishing partners are going and when you plan to return.

Keep fishing holes small and few. When drilling fishing holes with an ice auger, keep the diameter under eight inches. Bigger holes are not necessary to land fish and can create a safety hazard for others.

Watch your step. Avoid ice fishing near feeder streams or known springs; brush, logs, plants or docks. Also stay away from multiple ice cracks or ice that is popping or otherwise audible, plus and dark-colored ice that may be weak.

Spread out. Too many people congregated in one area may be more than the ice can safely support. Disperse weight and fishing holes.

Be prepared for weather conditions. Dress in layers and wear thermal underwear, fleece or wool, and wind and waterproof outerwear, especially for feet, hands and head. Take extra clothes, food, water, sand for traction, and a sled for easy on-ice transport of all equipment.

Be prepared for emergencies. Carry equipment such as ice picks or awls, rope, and personal flotation devices. Also pack a first-aid kit and matches for starting a fire.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers the following guide for traveling on ice: 2 inches or less, stay off; 4 inches, ice fishing or other activities on foot; 5 inches, snowmobile or ATV travel; 8 inches to 12 inches, car or small pickup travel; 12 inches to 15 inches, medium truck travel.

Remember that these thicknesses are merely guidelines for new, clear, solid ice. Many factors other than thickness can cause ice to be unsafe. White ice, sometimes called snow ice, is only about one-half as strong as new clear ice so the above thicknesses should be doubled.

When is the Best Time to Begin

You will find you have the best success fishing for lake whitefish early in the morning. Sunrise till about noon is your best bet. By starting early after sunrise you will find you will have your greatest success as lake whitefish feeding activity will lessen as the sun gets higher in the sky. If your weather conditions include a cloudy day chances are you can increase your fishing success past the noon cutoff. Try to locate areas with a hard bottom and with a good drop off. Because whitefish are a schooling species once you locate one chances are others will be found close by. Drill 5 or 6 holes and fish each one for about 20 minutes. If you have little or no success, move onto the next hole. An auger should be no more than 8 inches in diameter, which should be more than capable of landing any whitefish you encounter during your day of icefishing. Once you drilled your holes, take the time to clean the snow and slush from them. Many times the sound your power auger produces will spook any fish in the area. By taking the time to clean up your holes you give the whitefish time to return to their normal behaviour.

One of the best items a ice fisherman can purchase is a portable fishing tent. You will be spending a great deal of time out on the frozen lake and your comfort is a key ingredient in having an enjoyable day. Comfort will also help in your concentration.

Lake whitefish are bottom feeders in most situations and have been known to eat a wide variety of bottom-living invertebrates as well as smaller fishes. In some areas microscopic planktonic creatures form the majority of their diet. A wire worm jig is one of the most popular lure in the Canadian prairies and imitates the aquatic organisms that lake whitefish love to eat. Ensure you set the hook fast as whitefish have the tendency to spit it out fast. The key is to always be ready to set the hook quickly so it is vital you are always watching your wire worm. A nice 26 inch ice fishing rod is ideal for fishing for Lake whitefish. Ensure the rod has light to medium action as it will help you in feeling the whitefish strike. Braided line works best for icefishing as it retains no memory in the line. This can mean the difference between landing your catch and losing it.

Although Lake whitefish will bite spoons and other lures rigged up with such baits as minnows and leeches, the wire worm jig consistently outperforms all other methods of catching lake whitefish. The most popular colour for a wire worm is red. This colour worm mimics larvae found in most Canadian lakes. Experiment with different colours and sizes to see what works best for you on any given day or on different lakes. Carry a small journal with you to record weather conditions etc .

Bottom is Best

Again because lake whitefish are predominately bottom feeders, make sure you are fishing about a foot off the bottom. Start your presentation within this zone and jig your wire worm once every minute or so to entice any whitefish in the area to come on over and have a look. This suggestion is only a starting point for your day and is not set in stone. If you observe whitefish at various other depths then adjust your presentation to have a good chance at landing them. If possible rig up several rods with a variety of presentations varying the size and colour of your wire worms. This will save you time if one colour and size is not successful.

They’ve taken a military classic traditional and kept it perfectly, classic-with 75% reprocessed wool, anchor buttons, hardwarmer pockets and quilted nylon lining. The willingness to share great fishing spots with other folks is and edge to the newcomer to ice fishing. No one particular minds if a few a lot more holes are minimize and some more fish taken. Most other anglers will be a lot more than ready to go over their success and the bait or lures that have been most thriving.

Most thriving fishermen do not intellect sharing their secrets and quite a few oldtimers derive wonderful satisfaction supporting a newcomer to ice fishing the benefits of his several years of knowledge. You will some exceptions to this but do not be frightened to question and permit another person know you are new to winter fishing.

Finding FISH

Locating the location of fish is frustrating at situations. Keep in mind fish in the winter act distinctive than in the summer months. The only necessity for a fish in winter is to eat ample to survive. They generally feed only portion of the day to not waste a whole lot of their strength. The levels of competition for foods looks to be the critical to fish feeding habits while fishing. Lots of ice fishermen do not take into consideration all the noise of cutting holes setting up huts will influence the fish. After you settle down to fishing and cease all noisey motion the fish will arrive again and be additional active.

ICE FISHING Tools

It is not all that high-priced to get started off fishing all through the winter months( but you can get pricey if you desire). When you decide how significantly of your time will be expended fishing then go from there.

First things first. When it comes to fishing more than one aquatic sports aficionados will inform you its Walleye fish first on the list – first and foremost. You might even earn a Manitoba Master Anglers fishing award. Its Walleye fish or nothing to many a hunting or fishing outdoor enthusiast. Many anglers associate Walleye or Canadian Pickeral fishing only with lake waters. Yet the greatest fun and often the greatest rewards when it comes to these respected denizens of the deep are fishing for Walleyes in rivers and fast moving streams. All in all in can be considered much more of a challenge than simple staid lake water fishing. On top of that rivers and streams are often the locale of the best Walleye and Pickerel fishing that a good sportsman can ever come across.

Are those who fish for Walleye in rivers a different lot than those who ply lakes in search of prey? Perhaps. A lot of lakeside fishing can be said to be simpler and much easier than working a riverbed or fast moving streams. Precious water levels in lake watersheds stay fairly constant, and within limited ranges throughout the seasons of the year. It usually takes long term drought weather conditions or heavy rainwater from major weather disturbances to bring about severe and extreme low or high water levels in any lake water system or systems. Yet it’s no secret that river anglers consider it a matter of basic course to expect and even battle rising or falling stages of river water heights. Add additional constructs and difficulties to the fishing mix as the river bottoms can be bet to be in a constant flux. It’s no simple lake bed simply lying undisturbed deep beneath a lakes surface. Sandbars in any river system can be counted on to appear and magically disappear miraculously almost by themselves ,with changes occurring regularly , for no apparent reason or rhyme , and sometimes with changes accruing it seems – almost on a daily basis. Yesterdays or the last fortnight’s conditions oft don’t apply today – to the star fisherman out on the prowl for Walleye at his favorite river fishing hole or holes.

Changing bottom conditions will obviously also affect fish location. You have to find those Walleye fish to land them. As rapidly as water levels rise or fall, a key fish attracting current break can suddenly appear or completely vanish and affect fish location accordingly.

You can bet that when fishing in rivers and streams that any logpile or immersed rubble might well serve to accommodate Walleye fish not to mention great monsters of catch-able Pickeral through higher water levels that early in the early spring time fishing seasons of the year. Keep in mind that spotting and being able to register and note exceptional areas of riverside water currents stand out in the minds of professional Walleye fishing guides as one of the key merits of greatly recognized master Walleye and Pickerel sportsmen and hunters. Spend good time with experienced fishing and hunting guides and you will come to recognize along with them this fact.

Learn to “read ” and appreciate river water currents and you will long away on the road to successful fishing in rivers and river beds – not only in this case for Walleye fish but any of any of desirable fish species that you may well want to hook and land. What are the tricks of the sportsman’s trade? The pros seem to record and note, that water depth along with the torrents speed around objects in rivers and streams provide those all important and treasured “current breaks”, where you will find your most elusive as well as challenging fishing prey. Next search and discover areas in regards to slower moving even “slack” waters where nourishment for the fish , seem to gather and pool, and you will have discovered your pot of gold where your fish will congregate and assemble to feed. It’s no accident, all in all, it can be said – that the fish are where their favorite foods of the season are – and the exact locations where the avid, polished fisherman will land those master trophy Walleyes.

Throughout the midsummer period, salmon gain weight rapidly (two-thirds of their total weight at spawning is put on in wild feeding frenzies the last four months of their lives). They gradually become more available, too, showing up inshore along Lake Michigan from Muskegon up past Ludington, Manistee, Frankfort, Platte Bay, around into Grand Traverse Bay and off Charlevoix. Prime salmon fishing begins to peak by early August, if weather conditions are stable, improving weekly in a northward pattern. Arrival of the first big schools does vary from year to year, however, and until late August a telephone call could eliminate a useless auto trip.

The fishing from this time until October, when most of the spawning runs begin, can be nothing short of fabulous. Two days last August proved that to me.

I’d traveled to Ludington at the invitation of Skipper Mary DeWitt who heads the West Michigan Charter Service there. “You can’t believe how the fish are coming in,” he’s said on the telephone the night before. “I’m filling limits for two parties a day – and I could catch more!”

Not being hard to convince, I was aboard Mary’s boat by dawn as we headed out a full ten miles offshore. Mary uses a specialized device called a “downrigger” that enables him to keep several trolled lures at exact depths practically under the boat’s stern. Tests with a thermometer showed the preferred water temperature to be at 40 to 70 feet, and blips on the boat’s recording fathometer indicated that it was the best depth for fish.

Setting seven lines takes a few minutes. But Mary hadn’t put the fourth one down when the first broke loose from its downrigger, a coho swirling wildly behind the boat as it rose to the surface. Fifteen minutes later we lost two more and then boated a second one, then tallied three more quickly. All around us boats were netting fish, filling coolers with cohos weighing between 8 and 18 pounds.

A full hour’s lull allowed us to stow gear and settle down, but then we hit another school of fish – or found the first school again – and bouncing rods and aching wrists were the order of the morning. The limit for three of us was 15 fish, and we lost quite a few that struck and were gone. But we still managed to lay 14 fish on the cleaning dock by noon, and it was then I discovered that one of our catch was a fat 12-pound steelhead no one had noticed in the flurry of activity, since cohos and steelhead look much alike.

When weather conditions are bad outside, I sit inside with a roaring fire and remember the time when I was brave enough to tackle the elements, hitch up the boat and head for the river. The lousier the winter weather, the better the fishing for sauger on the Tennessee River.

Down here in the south we call sauger, “jack salmon”. As a kid, fishing on the river below Guntersville Dam, I never knew there was such a thing as a sauger until I grew up and read a copy of Field & Stream magazine, and for the first time saw a picture of the fish they called a sauger. I thought they were confused!

Last year on a dreary, cloudy, cold and miserable morning at daybreak, my brother and I drove down highway 421 from Huntsville, Alabama to the Guntersville dam. As rotten as the day was, the parking lot just above the launching ramp was filled with cars and trucks with a boat trailer connected to each. We immediately knew the jacks were biting.

We put the boat in the water about a half mile west of the dam. If I thought I was cold before, I was shocked at how frigid it became as I was zipping down the river at forty miles an hour in the morning fog. About six miles later, we rounded a bend and as if by magic we ran out of the fog and almost banged into group of at least twenty boats congregated up and down a narrow passage close to the mouth of the Paint Rock River.

The water here was 30 to 40 feet deep where we anchored the boat. Every few minutes one of the other fishermen would pull in another fish. Most of the ones being caught were in the 2 pound and under class, though larger ones occasionally were being hauled into boats up and down the river.

My brother was frantically trying to get his tackle together and start fishing. I was too cold to think of anything other than grabbing the Thermos and pouring myself a cup of hot coffee. When I left the house that morning I thought that my brother and I were the only insane people in Alabama, now I was looking at a whole river full of nutty folks!

Saugers tend to congregate around eddy pools such as those coming out of a tributary like the one we were close to that morning. They are cylindrical fish, light brown speckled, with a couple of dark blotches on their sides. They have two dorsal fins as well as a mouth full of sharp teeth that will lacerate a finger if you are not careful.

In my opinion the jack salmon, as I grew up knowing it, is one of the best tasting fish I have eaten out of southern waters. While the annual spawning run is in April or May, thousands of these tasty fish congregate in the tail waters of the Guntersville Dam, Wheeler Dam and Wilson Dam in earlier months.

Like most of the fishermen I could see, I was also using a heavy jig tipped with a live minnow. The jigs head was a fluorescent red with a three inch blue haired skirt. After dropping the rig overboard, I pulled the bait about a foot off the bottom and was reaching for my coffee cup when I felt a tug on the line.

I reeled in a two pound sauger just as my brother had one on also. Within a couple of hours we had several good sized fish, and then a late morning sun drenched us with welcomed warmth. The fish stopped biting for us as well as the other boats on the river.

I have been trying to out think fish for years. Counting the amount of time and money I have spent fishing, it is apparent that the fish have been winning. Of all the things I have learned is, I still do not know why the sauger population on the river bites better on the most miserable of days, but I have a theory.
