The majority of ice fishing anglers today will choose a 28 inch jigging rod with medium action. There are many different options available to the ice fisherman and because of this, choosing the rod that is right for you can be a daunting task. By keeping in mind the species of fish you are after, plus the type of power you are looking for in an ice fishing rod and your lure selection, you will find it much simpler to reduce the amount of rods you need to choose from. By reducing the amount of rods you need to choose from you are now able to concentrate on the three most important factors when considering a new ice fishing rod, length, material and construction.

Begin by Selecting the Species You are interested In
“Species selection is always my number one factor when choosing an ice fishing rod,” says Clint Gervais, from Stony Plain, Alberta. Very few companies will manufacture ice fishing rods based on species and for that reason alone you may need to preselect your ice fishing rods using rod power as the benchmark.
Ultra-light, light, medium, and heavy are the most common classes. Use the same criteria you would use in selecting a rod for summer use. Target species vrs rod power.
Choose ultra-light rods for panfish. Light rods are good for perch, and light to medium rods are good for walleye, whitefish and trout. Heavy rods are best for Northern Pike or lake trout. Try to keep in mind to keep your rod as light as possible for the species you are seeking. Sometimes it is better to lose a few of the big ones because of a lighter rod, than to give up that sense of feel you get from using a lighter rod. It really helps if you can feel the subtle action of your lure through the rod.

Choosing a Rod Based on Lure Selection and Species
The next step when choosing an ice fishing rod is figuring out what types of lures/bait are you going to be using and what methods you will utilize to ensure success. Different species and methods of ice fishing require different rods.
One method which seems to be on the rise is to bring about 5-6 different rods having different action characteristics loaded up with various test lines and rigs. Use a 5 gallon pail to carry them in and you will find yourself having more success this ice fishing season. As always it is important to remember that no one ice fishing rod will encompass all the species you are targeting this year.Give the multi ice-rod approach a try.

What is Rod Action
Action is always an important factor when choosing an ice fishing rod simply because it always influences your lure/bait presentation. It will also be a determining factor in the way you play the fish.
Rods which exhibit fast-action will flex at the tip. Flexing in the middle is a characteristic of medium action rods, while slow action rods bend to the bottom of the handle. Fast- and medium-action rods are used by most ice anglers because of their balance of strength and sensitivity. A slow-action rod is unable in most cases to transmit a nibble or light strike from your fish.
Fast-action graphite rods are your best bet when using jigging as your main method of ice fishing. These rods also exhibit a greater degree of backbone which will enable you to acquire a better initial setting of the hook.
Medium-action rods are a good choice if using smelts, shrimp or minnnows when jigging. If you are jigging more aggressively than normal, the rod’s action will help to keep your bait on your hook.

Balancing Your Line and Lures
Creating the proper presentation requires you to choose a rod and lure that are properly balanced.
When you use an aggressive method of jigging your lure or bait, your ice fishing rod will need minimum flex in your rod’s tip. Aggressive jigging requires minimal flex in the rod tip from the lure’s weight to allow you to properly work baits. Too much flex and your presentation will not look the way you want it to.
Generally speaking, when using a medium to heavy action rod you should be alright with any monofilament. if paired with superline, it is highly unlikely the rod will bend enough to absorb the shock of setting a hook hard, which could mean ripping the lure from the fish’s mouth. When using braided line you should go with a lighter ice fishing rod then when using mono.

Rod Materials: Graphite vs. Fiberglass Which is Right For You?
Ice fishing anglers have an important decision to make when choosing the material their rod is made of. To put it simply you have 3 choices, graphite, fiberglass and composite.Graphite is the most expensive of the 3 but has many advantages over fiberglass or composite. Weight and sensitivity are graphite’s two main advantages over the other two. Graphite rods give the angler interested in feeling strikes an advantage because of its sensitivity.
Fiberglass rods may give up a little in the sensitivity arena, but are generally more durable than the graphite rods. They also tend to be a little less expensive than the graphite rods. If you are interested in a rod that will stand up to even the most extreme temperatures and one that will have the strength to land the big ones, then a fiberglass rod is right up your alley.

Line Eyes
One aspect of choosing an ice fishing rod is the number of guides a rod has. Try to find a rod with a minimum of 4 guides. These guides will enhance bend in the rod giving it a more uniform bend. As always guides should lessen in size towards the tip of your rod.
Ensure your rod has large guides. Smaller eyes will ice up quickly. Larger eyes will pay off in the long run as you will spend less time cleaning line and more time fishing.

By spending some time to match your rod to the species or to your style of fishing you will go a long way to ensuring a successful day out ice fishing.

Oxygen equals fish…

Too often while ice fishing pike, anglers head to the same location they had success in the spring and summer. While the pike may be at these locations for part of the winter, they most likely won’t be there for long. Pike are often on the move during the winter months as they seek pockets of water with high oxygen content.

Much like a blood-hound on the trail of a rabbit, northern pike have an amazing capacity for finding water with the richest quantity of oxygen. It doesn’t matter if they are in a lake or river, pike will consistently seek out water with the most plentiful oxygen. These are the locations you need to find in order to catch fish..

Think about the terrific weed beds that form during the spring and summer months. These locations are often havens for large and plentiful northern pike. But when the ice forms, these great summer-time locations can actually drive pike to seek out different waters.

The reason? As the underwater foliage decomposes over the winter it sucks oxygen out of the water. As the oxygen level decreases the pike are driven to seek out different locations. While ice fishing for pike you need to be attuned to this fact.

So where does one find these oxygen rich locations? Well, it is actually fairly straight forward. Those that have the most success pike fishing know that the oxygen levels are higher where a creek or river empties into a lake. As the fresh water enters the lake or reservoir it drives the oxygen content up in these locations. Find the oxygen and you will find the fish.

Ice fishing for pike is a terrific way to spend a winter day. Keep your location in mind and have a successful outing.

Some of the best ice fishing in the world takes place at Lake of the Woods, where walleye and muskie are king in the waters near Northwest Angle & Islands, although you may find significant schools of northern pike, smallmouth bass, and crappie. Come December and Four Mile Bay has 7-9 inches of ice, which is safe for travel by ATV and snowmobiles. Bright-colored jigs can get you a few big lunkers, so you can gear yourself for an adventure of your lifetime. Many ice angles flock to the lake looking for a prize catch. Along South Shore, you can ice fish to your heart’s content for walleye and sauger during the day or night. Yes, ice fishing does take on a whole new dimension when you decide to fish at Lake of the Woods.
The vast area of the lake gives ice anglers the opportunity to explore a variety of different spots. There are several ice fishing services in the area which provide anglers with all the amenities including licenses, bait, equipment, and guides, and travel arrangements to different parts of the lake. If you want a comfortable home base then there are a few lodges in the area with their own cluster of icehouses. Whatever you choose, you can expect to dip into some tasty deep-fried walleye or crappie on a cold wintry day. Don’t be discouraged if you are a rookie, there are plenty of chances of catching a trophy, since the lake is notorious pulling up some real BIG FISH. Do pay attention to the fishing regulations so that you can enjoy your Lake of the Woods ice fishing experience.

I’ve been fishing for over 50 years and even more frequently in the last 10 years; during this time I have learned a lot of countless things about fishing in general. The most important is that you can never know it all. Even a novice can show an old timer a trick or two.

Over the years I’ve seen hundreds of anglers come to the areas I fish full of enthusiasm and determination and they end up leaving frustrated and confused. With just a little advice this could have made for a better experience and more than likely created another fishing addict like myself. It may take some time to turn you into that pro, but the enjoyment of the sport would be more easily realised.

When starting out the very first thing you want is just basic information on where and when to fish. Sounds easy and generally just ask other anglers, lodge owners, bait store owners, heck just ask.

Now for the fishing equipment, the rod and reel. Sounds simple enough, but maybe not. As in most other sports, cheap or poor equipment will result in poor results. As an example I met a fellow from southern Ontario (Toronto) while fishing here at home for Northern pike and asked him how the fishing was. His remark was that he was going to rent a boat and give it a try. So I asked him if he would like to go out with me that evening and he accepted. I met him at the dock and told him to load his gear in the boat and offered him a life jacket and away we went. I did not notice what he had loaded at first except he had a nice big new tackle box, as we moved away I asked where is your rod and reel. He went on to open his new tackle box and proceeded to pull out one of those pocket fisherman rigs. Of course I had a hard time from not laughing out loud, but went on to offer him one of my other rigs already in the boat.

Once we hit the area I intended to troll he went on to politely say he wanted to use his own rod but asked what one of his lures he should use for northern pike. He had one large red and white spoon and I told him to use that and made sure he let out enough line for what we were doing. I believe I was praying for him to get the first strike and sure enough he did after about 15 minutes or so and the fun began.

Now this pike he had on was I guessed about 15 pounds, not that big but the struggle with that little, short toy he had was hilarious to watch. I did not believe he would get the fish to the boat but he did although to fast, I had the net and told him to slow down, he did not hear me as I leaned over to net the fish he had it reeled up to about 2 feet from the tip of that little rod, all that pike did was lean on the line and he was gone.

I must add here that he also had no leader on that rig. After that he was so excited and of course wanted to keep fishing, but asked if he could use one of my other rods which was fine because I wanted to see him really hook and land a nice fish. To shorten this story he did land 2 more northerns and a small walleye. Oh yes I did catch a fish, one walleye and one pike, but we had a new fishing addict here. The next day he went into town to the Canadian Tire store and got properly equipped.

I imagine that young man from southern Ontario had some great tall tales to tell when he got home. I wonder how big that one that got away is Now!

A light action graphite spinning rod and reel will handle most fish you will want to catch, plus it is light enough for the beginner to feel even the light hit of those walleye.

So just get out there relax, take your time. Bring some coffee or lunch or even better catch your lunch and cook on one of the many small islands all over these northern lakes. Mostly just enjoy it all the fresh air, wildlife and scenery. Enjoy it all while your watching that loon, deer or even a moose feeding, a big walleye might just swim up and inhale your bait sending that twitch up your line through your rod to your fingers. Set the hook and there’s lunch!

Well that’s enough from me time for supper and a 5 minute stroll down to the river and make a few casts and see what happens.

If you want to catch northern pike on early ice and you’ll definitely want to read this article. In this article I am going to discuss different tactics and baits for catching northern pike early in the winter. The first thing you’ll want to consider is what lake you’re going to fish on. The first thing you’ll want to consider is what lake you’re going to fish on.

The first thing you’ll want to consider is what lake you’re going to fish on. Early in the season I on the smaller lakes because they ice up faster than the larger lakes and you can get on them earlier in the year. I like to make sure that there is at least 2 inches of ice before I venture out onto a lake fishing.

Once you have chosen a lake to fish on, you’ll need to decide what part of the lake to try. Early in the winter when the ice is still fairly thin on the shallower areas of the lake. I will usually fish in anywhere from 2 to 5 feet of water when ice is under a foot thick. Try to find areas adjacent to weed beds and cabage areas. Many fisherman don’t think you can catch fish in the shallow water during the winter, but I have caught pike in 2 feet of water when there is been a foot of ice and only one foot of water underneath.

The only method I use for fishing northern pike through the ice, is tip up fishing. Here in Wisconsin where I live you are allowed to have three lines per person. So if you have three or four people in your group fishing together you can cover quite a bit of area with tip ups. You can spread them out at various depths, and if the fish seem be biting better at a certain depth you can move them all to that depth. You can also experiment with different dates on different tip ups to find out which bait the fish prefer.

As for baits for northern pike, my three favorites are.

1. Golden shiners, golden shiners are very good bait for northern pike if you can find them, in some areas they can be very difficult to find.

2. Sucker minnows. Sucker minnows are also a good bait for northern pike. I think the sucker minnows are easier to keep alive in shiners.

3. Silver shiners. This is my favorite bait for fishing northern pike. I like use a medium sized silver shiners, not the really large or small ones.

If you follow the tips in this article you should have no problems catching northern pike this winter. Good luck fishing.

Remember the thrill and excitement of Ice Fishing back in Spring 08

You can expect more to come in 200 / 2010 in friendly Manitoba

Whether its fishing on the ice , in warm hut , with that Miller’s on hand , or with hot ice chocolate perhaps mixed with some Manitoba special courtesy of your Transcona fishing buddy Jadran Transcona nothing plain beats it.

Look forward to the 2009 / 2010 set of events . Lots of trophy pickerels and Walleye fish to come. Get ready for it.

Planning a trip north to enjoy some spectacular trout, walleye and pike fishing during the month of April? One of my top choices at this time of year are the lakes and rivers around The Pas, Manitoba.
Four years ago I had chance to enjoy the spectacular walleye fishing in the Saskatchewan River right in the town itself. On my trip I was able to get out for an evening with local angler Dale Kerwin. We unloaded our snowmobiles right in town and headed west to the mouth of the Carrot River, one of the numerous tributaries that supply water to the Saskatchewan. After drilling a series of holes right at the mouth dropped our lines. Soon I had some activity on my stationary line. A twitch of the rod tip indicated there was some interest. Taking the rod out of the holder, quick up and down of the jig produced a viscous strike. Soon a small northern pike stuck its snout out of the hole to be quickly released. Two more and a sucker followed in succession. Later that evening we were joined by two local anglers, who took us to one of their secret spots a short distance away. Sure enough as the sun started to cast long shadows the walleye became active. Ice fishing for walleye and pike is excellent in this section of the river at this time of year as more and more fish move upstream to the Carrot River, a main spawning area. Many of the fish are coming out of Cedar Lake. Genetic sampling has proven that the walleye from The Pas, Cedar Lake and Cross Bay are from the same pool. Cross Bay remains open at this time of year and more anglers each year are heading up to try the spectacular ice fishing for both pike and walleye on this huge bay.
Barbe Lake is about seventy kilometres north of The Pas, up Highway 10, past Rocky Lake then left at the Sturgeon Landing road for about five kilometres. There if you look really hard you see a small sign peaking out of the bush on the right side of the road “Barbe Lake”. Recently friend Dave Colibaba visited this spectacular trout fishery and wasn’t disappointed.
He and a friend caught some master angler rainbow trout as well as one brook trout by just walking onto the ice by the boat launch. The southwest end of the lake has extensive weed flats while the northwest end has deep water with sharper drop-offs. The middle of the lake is a good bet at this time of the year, providing a balance in structure.
Finally, don’t forget about mighty Clearwater Lake, just a short drive north and east of The Pas. At this time of the year you can get some of the best fishing of the entire year. Last time up north on the lake I headed out by snowmachine with Rick Hubbs twenty kilometers to the northern end.We were fishing a shallow bay that averaged seven metres in deep. Hubbs said this particular bay held a wide variety of shallow forage, attracting larger lake trout to patrol the bay. Drilling off the end of a shallow reef, on this day Rick and myself caught five nice lake trout right in the middle of the day. Unfortunately I had to leave in the early afternoon to get back to Winnipeg. Hubbs says the best action for lake trout at this time of year is from 6:30 to 7:30 in the evening. We caught lake trout on a variety of techniques both with stationary lines and with jigging small spoons tipped with a minnow.
