The province advised Thursday that all shacks should be removed from the ice in southern and central Manitoba as soon as possible, as long as it’s safe to do so.

Normally shacks can remain until March 31, but mild temperatures have cut the ice fishing

season short this year. Shacks were to be removed from the Red River by March 13.

Those who don’t remove their shacks could be issued a fine by Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship.

Unfortunately this winter was very mild here in southern ontario, so much so that we haven’t had any chance of getting out to do any ice fishing on the resident lakes.  In fact to actually have a shot at ice fishing this year you would have to travel north at least three hours to find ice sufficient enough to hold you safely.

When I do try setting up a day on the ice I make sure that the company we go with are a great group of people.  The last thing you want is to be stuck in a hut for 8 hours with someone who complains or whines non-stop.  My fishing buddies are a great group of individuals so I don’t have to worry to much about that.  My wife who sometimes comes out with us during the summer usually heads out for a day on the ice as well.

I usually decide what species I am interested in chasing then I do my research on the lakes, species, outfitters, price, etc…

Next I call my buddies and see who’s interested in heading out, then we decide which day we will go.

None of my group are very serious ice fishermen so we rent a nice heated hut and hope for the best.

I prefer using small minnows as well as Berkley Gulp minnows for our bait.

“After the success of last year’s first family fishing weekend, we want to continue to encourage people to try ice fishing as a healthy and enjoyable leisure activity during the winter,” said Mackintosh.  “This weekend is a great way to spend time with family and friends while taking advantage of our world‑class fishing across the province.”

From Feb. 18 to 20, anglers will be able to fish without a licence provincewide, except in national parks where a federal licence is still required.  The same conservation limits that apply to licensed fishing will remain in effect.  While summer Family Fishing Weekends have been offered since 1992, this is the second winter Family Fishing Weekend to be offered in Manitoba.

In recognition of the second winter fishing weekend, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is hosting an amateur photo contest to promote ice fishing as a fun family activity.

“We want families to capture the beauty of Manitoba’s winter wonderland with a camera and post the photos on our Facebook page by Feb. 24,” said Reid Woods, president of the Manitoba Wildlife Federation.  “Three random names will be drawn to win family gift packs valued at more than $125.”

Ice fishers are expected to ensure conditions are safe before venturing onto the ice.  It is also important to ensure someone knows where you are fishing.

Many people in Gimli and surrounding areas found themselves wondering this week if beach weather was right around the corner. Ice fishers, meanwhile, monitored weather conditions carefully during the warm spell; at times doubting whether it was safe to be out on the ice at all.

In an interview with the Spectator this morning, Arnold Weidl, of the Manitoba Ice Fishing Association, spoke of the importance of assessing safety conditions before venturing out onto the lake.

“We’ve been cautioning people when they go out onto the lake,” Weidl said. “As of right now, it’s dicey.”

Weidl added many of his fellow ice fishers have been wary of taking their vehicles, especially, out on the ice lately. He said the front end of his friend’s truck sank into about a foot or so of ice near Winnipeg Beach recently. In many spots, patches of ice will be layered with water in between the packed snow cover right now, Weidl noted.

Meanwhile, this morning at about 10 a.m., a truck went through the ice about two miles from shore near Beaconia Beach in the Balsam Bay area. There were two occupants in the vehicle at the time.

Both men, who were the occupants of the vehicle, have now been located alive. They have been identified as a 51-year-old Winnipeg resident and a 54-year-old Grand Point, Man. resident.

The 54-year-old was located on Lake Winnipeg by a team with Search and Rescue Manitoba. His condition is unknown. The 51-year-old walked back to a local residence. Both men are currently being transported for medical attention.

RCMP thanked all those involved in the swift recovery.

The pair were on their way to go fishing when their vehicle broke through the ice.

Weidl said the ice is about 16 in. thick around Breezy Point and Chalet Beach right now, and 14 in. thick around Gimi and Winnipeg Beach. In an average winter, during peak ice-fishing season at the end of January, the ice could be 30 to 40 in. thick.

Frigid, blustery conditions descended on Lake Winnipeg today.

In Gimli tonight, Environment Canada forecasts periods of light snow ending overnight then clearing. North winds at 40 km/h, gusting to 60, are expected. Low -24 C and -36 C with the wind chill. Tomorrow, expect sunny conditions with 30 km/h north winds near noon, and then turning light in the evening. High -16 C. Wind chill -34 C.

“We’re in for cold snap,” observed Weidl. “So we expect to gain three to four inches rapidly. Then (the ice) will be safe again.”

For the seventh year in a row – family and friends of the late Brian Leclair, who died from cancer, set up a 24-hour fishing event on the Red River at Selkirk Park.

On Feb. 26 and 27, heated tents were set up on the Red River as well as many other ice fishing shelters as 82 ice fishing anglers participated in the 24-hour marathon which included a completive event as well as a celebrity challenge which featured members of the media.

Forty-nine-year-old Lucille Belanger, who is the sister-in-law of the late Brian Leclair, described the event as very much a family event.

“People come back every year,” said Belanger, just before the halfway mark of the 24-hour marathon of fishing. “Even for a cold day like today, we had a good showing,”

Despite a bitterly cold weekend in Selkirk for the annual event which resulted in a smaller number of participants as in previous years, those that stuck it out for the ice fishing marathon didn’t let the cold snag their enjoyment of an event that supports a worthwhile cause and continues to grow with activities for the fishermen and fisherwomen.

“We’re trying to expand the kid’s event, however this year it was just too cold for the outdoor kid’s activities so we moved the activities into the heated tents,” said Belanger.

Winnipeg resident Blake Hasiuk participated in the annual fishing derby for his first time, and despite not having a fish bite his hook after the first seven hours of fishing, the 45-year-old, whose father died from cancer, did win a large jar of jelly beans for guessing how many of the colourful candy pieces were contained in the jar.

“It’ll be interesting to see how many people are here at 2 a.m.,” said Hasiuk with a chuckle. “It’s nice to meet other people at the event that are supporting Cancer Care. Everyone has been nice from the minute I got here and I hope to be back next year.”

Mikket Brabinski stuck it out on the frozen Red River for the 24 hours and proved to be a Walleye warrior as he caught the largest fish at the event – a 32.75 inch Norhtern Pike. Shawn Bjornsson also proved to be a Walleye warrior in his own way as he was the top pledge earner at this year’s event as he raised $ 2,625.00.

Frank and Dorothy Normand were seen sitting side-by-side in the heated tent with their fishing rods held above two ice fishing holes cut into the ice of the Red River. An organized fishing challenge wasn’t enough for Frank and Dorothy as their own fishing challenge was also taking place at the Walleye Warrior fishing marathon, as Frank explained that whoever catches not only the first fish but also the largest fish has bragging rights once they get home.

“It’s great just getting out and fishing with my wife,” said Frank. “A lot of times you just go home with a smile.”

The couple didn’t let the fact that the fishing was a little slow at the fishing derby slow down their fun as they took advantage of the opportunity to be together, sharing a passion for fishing.

“I usually catch more than him,” said Dorothy with a smile. “It’s relaxing and it is fun.”

André Desrosiers, a natural resource officer based in Selkirk, said that after more than eight years of trying to persuade ice fishers to legibly scrawl their names and addresses near the door of their ice huts, the government decided to crack down.

Since last Friday, 12 unattended ice huts have been seized and towed off the river between Selkirk and Netley Creek, while a further eight fishers were fined $52 on the spot.

“The regulation has been in existence for decades,” Desrosiers said.

“But last Tuesday when we went out, we counted 110 sheds and 30 didn’t have owner identification on them. That’s a bit surprising given all the attention this issue has had.”

Last spring, when ice on the river broke up, several ice hut

spilled into the river, causing the RM of St. Clements to push for a ban on the shacks.

But the Manitoba government, after a public meeting in Selkirk in November, decided to increase enforcement instead of banning the huts.

Arnold Weidl, chairman of the Manitoba Ice Fishing Association, said the majority of ice fishers follow the rules.

“It is just a few who didn’t,” he said. “I talked to one of them and he admitted it was his fault.”

Since last Friday, the department has seized 12 ice-fishing shacks that don’t carry their owner’s name and address.

The crackdown comes after several huts spilled into the river after they were left abandoned on the ice last spring.

The Manitoba Ice Fishing Association says despite the seizures, the majority of ice fishers follow the decades-old rule to identify their shacks.

Melnick is asking officials of other Manitoba areas such as St. Andrews and Selkirk City to join her in the petition.

Builders of the shacks have a March 15 deadline to dismantle the temporary shelter. While they comply with the dismantling order, they often leave behind human waste, lumber, furniture and empty bottles.

Aside from the environmental damage the builders of the shack cause on the river, ice shacks that were not removed made it harder for ice cutters to reduce flooding damage from spring ice jams.

A staff of the Manitoba Natural Resources added that some users of the shacks do not fish at all, but use the temporary shelter as party venue, based on the lack of fishing holes on the shacks. Aside from using the shelter for parties, some visitors to the Red River use the shacks for illegal activities.

St. Clements Mayor Steve Strang said Manitoba is studying ways to solve the problem, without killing the ice-fishing industry. Among the options are to require shacks permits or establish a river commission to oversee the winter activity.

The Manitoba Floodway Authority advised residents and visitors in July 2009 to avoid travel on the 48-kilometer Red River Floodway Expansion Project, which is an active construction zone. The authority suggested that visitors and residents use alternative recreational areas and routes during the duration of the floodway construction project.

Planning a trip north to enjoy some spectacular trout, walleye and pike fishing during the month of April? One of my top choices at this time of year are the lakes and rivers around The Pas, Manitoba.
Four years ago I had chance to enjoy the spectacular walleye fishing in the Saskatchewan River right in the town itself. On my trip I was able to get out for an evening with local angler Dale Kerwin. We unloaded our snowmobiles right in town and headed west to the mouth of the Carrot River, one of the numerous tributaries that supply water to the Saskatchewan. After drilling a series of holes right at the mouth dropped our lines. Soon I had some activity on my stationary line. A twitch of the rod tip indicated there was some interest. Taking the rod out of the holder, quick up and down of the jig produced a viscous strike. Soon a small northern pike stuck its snout out of the hole to be quickly released. Two more and a sucker followed in succession. Later that evening we were joined by two local anglers, who took us to one of their secret spots a short distance away. Sure enough as the sun started to cast long shadows the walleye became active. Ice fishing for walleye and pike is excellent in this section of the river at this time of year as more and more fish move upstream to the Carrot River, a main spawning area. Many of the fish are coming out of Cedar Lake. Genetic sampling has proven that the walleye from The Pas, Cedar Lake and Cross Bay are from the same pool. Cross Bay remains open at this time of year and more anglers each year are heading up to try the spectacular ice fishing for both pike and walleye on this huge bay.
Barbe Lake is about seventy kilometres north of The Pas, up Highway 10, past Rocky Lake then left at the Sturgeon Landing road for about five kilometres. There if you look really hard you see a small sign peaking out of the bush on the right side of the road “Barbe Lake”. Recently friend Dave Colibaba visited this spectacular trout fishery and wasn’t disappointed.
He and a friend caught some master angler rainbow trout as well as one brook trout by just walking onto the ice by the boat launch. The southwest end of the lake has extensive weed flats while the northwest end has deep water with sharper drop-offs. The middle of the lake is a good bet at this time of the year, providing a balance in structure.
Finally, don’t forget about mighty Clearwater Lake, just a short drive north and east of The Pas. At this time of the year you can get some of the best fishing of the entire year. Last time up north on the lake I headed out by snowmachine with Rick Hubbs twenty kilometers to the northern end.We were fishing a shallow bay that averaged seven metres in deep. Hubbs said this particular bay held a wide variety of shallow forage, attracting larger lake trout to patrol the bay. Drilling off the end of a shallow reef, on this day Rick and myself caught five nice lake trout right in the middle of the day. Unfortunately I had to leave in the early afternoon to get back to Winnipeg. Hubbs says the best action for lake trout at this time of year is from 6:30 to 7:30 in the evening. We caught lake trout on a variety of techniques both with stationary lines and with jigging small spoons tipped with a minnow.
