Ice fishing derbies in Manitoba give anglers a chance to compete for prizes by catching the largest fish. Most of the derbies occur in March when lake ice reaches its thickest point. Derby officials drill holes in the ice, and ticket-holders select a hole from which they hope to catch a trophy-sized walleye, the big draw in Manitoba.

Events

The Manitoba province boasts several derbies, with the largest taking place at the Dauphin Lake Ice Fishing Derby (originalicefishingcontest.com) where $40,000 is up for grabs for the first-place winner. The derby takes place on Dauphin Lake in Dauphin in western Manitoba. Another derby, the Lac du Bonnet Ice Fishing Derby (lacdubonnetchamber.com/derby), takes place in Lac du Bonnet, located northeast of Winnipeg, close to Whiteshell and Nopiming provincial parks. The annual Falcon Lake Winter Fish-Off (winterfishoff.com) draws anglers to the community of Falcon Lake in southeastern Manitoba, located along the south edge of Whiteshell Provincial Park.

Rules

All the derbies require you to use one ice-fishing pole per entry ticket, with most of the derbies limiting each angler to two tickets and two hooks. Only the person in whose name the ticket is purchased may participate in the derby. On the day of the derby, ticket holders and derby officials are the only people allowed in the fishing area. Most derbies award the prizes to the biggest fish caught, but the Lac du Bonnet derby relies on pre-determined hidden lengths and times to award prizes for the biggest fish caught. The lengths and times are kept secret until the end of the derby, at which point they are compared to the fishermen’s entries to determine who receives the rewards.

Structures

To help keep warm during Manitoba’s cold winter days, the Dauphin Lake derby allows you to erect portable tents, tarps and wind breaks around your fishing hole once the derby opens. Wooden or lockable buildings and huts are not allowed. The Lac du Bonnet derby allows you to erect a one-sided windbreak, but tents and other structures are not allowed. The Falcon Lake derby allows you to use portable shacks.

Licenses

Before you cast your pole in one of the derbies, you must buy a Manitoba fishing license at a sporting goods store. Non-residents must apply to the Manitoba Department of Conservation and Water Stewardship (gov.mb.ca) to complete an application and submit their fees to obtain their license. The forms are available online, or you can wait until you reach the province to purchase your license through sporting goods or bait-and-tackle shops. The licenses are also available from the Departments of Conservation and Water Stewardship in the towns of Lac du Bonnet and Dauphin.

Why fish ? Why yet ice fishing in the cold Manitoba winter prairie climes ?

Here is an example of why the sport of Ice Fishing maintains such a hold when it comes to hardy , sturdy yet stubborn local Manitoba sportsmen , fisherman and anglers as well as staunch outdoors enthusiasts:

Wayne Desjarlais has been a teacher at the Ebb and Flow School for almost twenty years. Recently he contacted friend Garry Gurke of Nueltin Fly-In Lodges to see if I would come up and do a seminar on ice fishing for the students at the school.
Located on Highway Number Fifty on the west shore of Lake Manitoba, this community has always enjoyed the bountiful supply of fish that swim in this huge shallow lake. Wayne was first introduced to sport fishing as a young boy when his father took him out any time he could. Wayne has transferred that passion on to his sons and to the community as a whole. Each year he and other members of the community organize a large ice fishing derby in March . This year the event will be held March Twenty First . Tickets and registration are available at the towns new community hall.
Through the Provincial Rod and Reel program and the Fisheries Enhancement Fund we were able to supply four hundred and fifty ice fishing rod and reel combos to the students of the school from Grades One all the way to Twelve. As well for the younger students they received a copy of Carol Szuminsky’s book, Andrew Goes Fishing, a made in Manitoba publication that outlines the great angling opportunities for people in this province.
Ebb and Flow was the twenty second community to receive a visit in the last five years as part of this provincial initiative. Gurke is passionate in his believe in the importance of this outreach in keeping young people connected with the outdoors. As part of the presentation the students learn about fish biology, the environment and stewardship.

Residents of Arctic Bay awoke to a strange sight above the hamlet last week.

On Jan 2 at about 7 a.m. a bright light streaked across the sky, leaving a trail of smoke behind it.

While most residents only caught its tail end, “one person actually saw it, and from what he was saying, the whole community was lit up as it passed,” said Joeli Qamanirq, the hamlet’s SAO. “That was the first time that ever happened in the community.”

Some Ikpiarjungmiut thought at first that it could be a fallen American spy satellite, according to Qamanirq.

A Greenlandic newspaper reported a similar occurrence on the same day.

According to the Semitsiaq article, the head of the Steno Museum planetarium believed it to be a meteor, which likely landed someplace in Northern Canada.

Campground Tips:

- be extra sure that all fire starting materials and matches are extinguished before leaving your winter camp. Break matches in half

- Build no fires except in designated firepits – no matter how cold the Manitoba Canada winter is. Or use a camp stove – such as a Coleman camp stove. Before leaving your ice fishing hut make sure any fires in your fishing or tenting area are completly out

- Be careful with with cigarettes ,cigars and pipe ashes. Crush them thoroughly before discarding. Jadran Transcona , Lake Manitoba Senior Outfitter notes – never be lazy and toss them from your vehicle

- Even in the winter ice fishing season take care not to litter

- Be sensitive to wildlife. The Lake Manitoba Narrows area remains a pristine fisherman and ice fisherman’s delight. Bears can be dangerous and should never be fed. Food must be stored away from your campsite as well as Ice Fishing Hut or huts. A locked vehicle or van is the best. Avoid attracting hungy animals. Do not store food in your ice fishing hut or ice fishing huts.

- Warm clothing is needed always in the Lake Manitoba regions in the wintertime . Overpack warm winter clothng and winter time boots rather than underpack
