The cold temperatures of the past week have insured safe travel on all of the lakes in the Copper River Basin. And good ice means good fishing. Lake trout are the primary target for most anglers in this area. These trout can reach 20 pounds and better; the state record is 47 pounds. A fish more than 15 pounds is usually good for a story, especially if you try to get it through an eight-inch auger hole out of 20 feet of water. Lake trout abundance in Alaska varies considerably from one water body to the next. Generally speaking, the smaller lakes have a greater quantity of fish, while Crosswind Lake, Paxson Lake and Swede Lake are generally known for big trout. Fielding, Summit and the Lake Louise system also produce plenty of larger fish. Several of the small lakes along the Denali Highway have population estimates of nine fish per acre, while Paxson Lake produces just more one fish per acre.

However, last winter a trout nearly 30 pounds was caught at Paxson, while you would be lucky to get a five-pound fish in the majority of the lesser systems. Lake trout can be fished by a variety of means. Spoons, such as daredevils and Kamloops, work well. A relatively active red-and-white or chartreuse lure in 12 to 20 feet of water will usually get results. A larger presentation, such as a halibut jig or light-colored buck-tail, generally will produce larger fish. To target these fish, work your rig slowly and fish water as shallow as six feet, especially later in the season. Bait, such as herring or whitefish, in conjunction with a lure, is also effective, but first, check the regulations for the lake you intend to fish — many have bait and lure restrictions. Anglers will have the greatest success between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. during the winter months.

Good quality line is also a must. There is significant wear and tear if you have a big fish running with a lure in shallow water. That wear can be minimized somewhat by feathering the bottom edges of your auger hole to make it less abrasive. I prefer a disappearing mono-filament, such as Trilene, at about 20-pound test. A portable ice fishing house is a plus. A good house will allow you to be out in the wind at minus 20 in relative comfort. A sunflower head on a small propane bottle will get your coat off and possibly even the kids in to fish with you. An 18-inch square hole flared to be a couple of feet wide at the bottom will give a lot of visibility and allow for lighter tackle. I once had a trout more than 20 pounds come up into the hole after my jig. Of course, he got away. Lake trout are a long-lived species. Some have been recorded at 50 years of age. Most don’t spawn until they are more than 7 years old and even then some of the fish may be less than 18 inches in length. In some water bodies, sexual maturity may take 14 years. Lake trout spawn in September or early October. The exact timing is triggered by water temperature. Their growth rate is still a matter of conjecture despite being studied near to death in water systems throughout Alaska and Canada. One fish tagged in Paxson Lake grew only a half-inch in nine years! As a rule, a 20-inch fish will be about 10 years old, though some fish will never get much bigger, even if they live beyond 30. Because of the slow recruitment, catch limits are relatively small. There is a one- or two-fish limit in the majority of roadside lakes. Catch and release is an effective conservation tool since many of the fish taken through the ice are caught in the upper jaw. They are relatively easy to turn back unharmed if not removed from the water. Lake trout feed on other fish, water bugs and snails.

Local knowledge will tell you that the snail-eaters stay small, have orange flesh and taste better. There are no real hard facts to substantiate this, but check stomach contents of those fish that have yellowish flesh and visible fat on the inside of the body cavity and you will find them full of whitefish or salmon smolt. Lakers can be cooked in a number of ways — broiled, baked or fried. Cut them in half-inch squares, boil them for three minutes, add cooked potatoes and celery, plus a bit of milk and you will have a delicious fish soup. Use paper bowls or plates and there aren’t even dishes to wash — and that gives you a shot at going fishing again soon.http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/11/21/1916260/cold-weather-equals-safe-travel.html

Known as the ice fishing capital of Canada, Lake Simcoe is a bustle of activity in winter with seasonal ice fishing villages dotted across the lake, fishing huts and bungalows full with anglers from near and far and even the Great Canadian Ice Fishing Championship each year. Winter mainstays on Lake Simcoe include lake trout, whitefish and northern pike but the lake is also a hotspot for jumbo yellow perch and black crappie.

For well-equipped anglers willing to fish in the open air and explore, the options are unlimited. Many resorts stay open all winter and can be used as home bases for ice anglers. On Lake Simcoe you can enjoy all the comforts of home in heated shanties, rented for reasonable rates, perched over the best fishing holes with on-ice transportation to the fishing grounds included. There are many choices for Lake Simcoe ice fishing hut and bungalow rentals, with many including the services of experienced guides, home cooked meals, vacation packages and even fish guarantees.

Dave?s Fish Huts has been operating for 45 years and produces an 85% catch in average while Iceguidez.com guarantees its anglers at least one fish caught per day for the group or half the cost of the trip is refunded. Phillips Ice Hut rentals offers heated shanties over some of the best fishing holes and Tim Hale?s Fish Huts offers the choice of cozy on shore cottage rentals. Sir-Catch-A-Lot Pro Guiding features half and full day excursions or try Simcoe Fishing Adventures for weekend vacation packages. And Love to Fish Simcoe provides transportation to your hut but ensures every 3-4 hours a guide checks in on the group in case they wish to call it a day a bit early.

Lake Simcoe is also the home to the Canadian Ice Fishing Championships February 19-20, 2011 with an estimated $ 20,000 in cash prizes to be awarded. Two person teams fish for 6 hours for two days and are awarded points based on the species and size of fish caught. The official host destination for the 2011 ice fishing championship is the Sutton Legion in Sutton West, Ontario.

The majority of ice fishing anglers today will choose a 28 inch jigging rod with medium action. There are many different options available to the ice fisherman and because of this, choosing the rod that is right for you can be a daunting task. By keeping in mind the species of fish you are after, plus the type of power you are looking for in an ice fishing rod and your lure selection, you will find it much simpler to reduce the amount of rods you need to choose from. By reducing the amount of rods you need to choose from you are now able to concentrate on the three most important factors when considering a new ice fishing rod, length, material and construction.

Begin by Selecting the Species You are interested In
“Species selection is always my number one factor when choosing an ice fishing rod,” says Clint Gervais, from Stony Plain, Alberta. Very few companies will manufacture ice fishing rods based on species and for that reason alone you may need to preselect your ice fishing rods using rod power as the benchmark.
Ultra-light, light, medium, and heavy are the most common classes. Use the same criteria you would use in selecting a rod for summer use. Target species vrs rod power.
Choose ultra-light rods for panfish. Light rods are good for perch, and light to medium rods are good for walleye, whitefish and trout. Heavy rods are best for Northern Pike or lake trout. Try to keep in mind to keep your rod as light as possible for the species you are seeking. Sometimes it is better to lose a few of the big ones because of a lighter rod, than to give up that sense of feel you get from using a lighter rod. It really helps if you can feel the subtle action of your lure through the rod.

Choosing a Rod Based on Lure Selection and Species
The next step when choosing an ice fishing rod is figuring out what types of lures/bait are you going to be using and what methods you will utilize to ensure success. Different species and methods of ice fishing require different rods.
One method which seems to be on the rise is to bring about 5-6 different rods having different action characteristics loaded up with various test lines and rigs. Use a 5 gallon pail to carry them in and you will find yourself having more success this ice fishing season. As always it is important to remember that no one ice fishing rod will encompass all the species you are targeting this year.Give the multi ice-rod approach a try.

What is Rod Action
Action is always an important factor when choosing an ice fishing rod simply because it always influences your lure/bait presentation. It will also be a determining factor in the way you play the fish.
Rods which exhibit fast-action will flex at the tip. Flexing in the middle is a characteristic of medium action rods, while slow action rods bend to the bottom of the handle. Fast- and medium-action rods are used by most ice anglers because of their balance of strength and sensitivity. A slow-action rod is unable in most cases to transmit a nibble or light strike from your fish.
Fast-action graphite rods are your best bet when using jigging as your main method of ice fishing. These rods also exhibit a greater degree of backbone which will enable you to acquire a better initial setting of the hook.
Medium-action rods are a good choice if using smelts, shrimp or minnnows when jigging. If you are jigging more aggressively than normal, the rod’s action will help to keep your bait on your hook.

Balancing Your Line and Lures
Creating the proper presentation requires you to choose a rod and lure that are properly balanced.
When you use an aggressive method of jigging your lure or bait, your ice fishing rod will need minimum flex in your rod’s tip. Aggressive jigging requires minimal flex in the rod tip from the lure’s weight to allow you to properly work baits. Too much flex and your presentation will not look the way you want it to.
Generally speaking, when using a medium to heavy action rod you should be alright with any monofilament. if paired with superline, it is highly unlikely the rod will bend enough to absorb the shock of setting a hook hard, which could mean ripping the lure from the fish’s mouth. When using braided line you should go with a lighter ice fishing rod then when using mono.

Rod Materials: Graphite vs. Fiberglass Which is Right For You?
Ice fishing anglers have an important decision to make when choosing the material their rod is made of. To put it simply you have 3 choices, graphite, fiberglass and composite.Graphite is the most expensive of the 3 but has many advantages over fiberglass or composite. Weight and sensitivity are graphite’s two main advantages over the other two. Graphite rods give the angler interested in feeling strikes an advantage because of its sensitivity.
Fiberglass rods may give up a little in the sensitivity arena, but are generally more durable than the graphite rods. They also tend to be a little less expensive than the graphite rods. If you are interested in a rod that will stand up to even the most extreme temperatures and one that will have the strength to land the big ones, then a fiberglass rod is right up your alley.

Line Eyes
One aspect of choosing an ice fishing rod is the number of guides a rod has. Try to find a rod with a minimum of 4 guides. These guides will enhance bend in the rod giving it a more uniform bend. As always guides should lessen in size towards the tip of your rod.
Ensure your rod has large guides. Smaller eyes will ice up quickly. Larger eyes will pay off in the long run as you will spend less time cleaning line and more time fishing.

By spending some time to match your rod to the species or to your style of fishing you will go a long way to ensuring a successful day out ice fishing.

Come summer or winter, the best place for a good catch of bass, pike, walleye, whitefish, and lake trout is the ‘Ice Fishing Capital of Canada’, Lake Simcoe. Located on Cooks Bay in the town of Keswick, a mere 45 minutes north from Toronto, Lake Simcoe is where anglers head during the winter ice fishing season for perch and pike. It doesn’t matter if you are a pro or just a rookie ‘hooked’ onto the sport of ice fishing, Lake Simcoe covers 744 sq. km stocked with over 60 species of fish. To add to it, there are many winter lodges and cottages in and around the lake, which is no wonder why it attracts the most anglers during winter than any other place in the province.
Fishing on hard water is the best way to beat the winter blues, more so when you have Lake Simcoe with the most productive hard water in southern Ontario. Most areas are covered by up to eighteen inches of ice with the southeastern side of the lake having the best conditions with open ice roads and thickest layers of ice. Georgina Island and Ducos Point are the popular spots along the southern stretch. Apart from pike and walleye, ice fishermen come to Lake Simcoe for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, whitefish, and lake trout. With any bait, it is easy to haul up a good catch of yellow perch. However, some of the other species are fussy, so don’t forget to bring along a variety of bait and ice fishing gear. Speaking of gear, there are place to rent and buy gear such as an ice fishing rod or ice fishing house.

Manitobans and visitors will be able to fish without a licence Feb. 19-21, the province announced this morning in proclaiming the first Winter Family Fishing Weekend.

“We encourage Manitobans and visitors to take advantage of this free ice fishing weekend as a healthy winter activity and an opportunity to enjoy Manitoba’s great outdoors,” Water Stewardship Minister Christine Melnick said in a news release.

For the Louis Riel weekend only, anglers will be able to ice fish without a provincial licence in all waters except those in federal parks, where a federal licence will still be required.

The province is reminding fishers to check ice conditions and not to litter.

Each adult angler who would normally require a licence will be allowed to keep a limit of four walleye or sauger, four pike, two smallmouth bass, two stocked trout, one channel catfish and one lake trout, in keeping with the limits normally in place for a conservation licence.

Children under the age of 16 who are Manitoba residents are exempted from licensing year-round and entitled to their own limits as per an adult angling licence.

More information and specific regulations by area is available in the 2010 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide. More information can also be obtained by calling 945-6784 or by visiting www.manitobafisheries.com.

Dave’s Fish Huts has been operating for 45 years and produces an 85% catch in average while Iceguidez.com guarantees its anglers at least one fish caught per day for the group or half the cost of the trip is refunded. Phillips Ice Hut rentals offers heated shanties over some of the best fishing holes and Tim Hale’s Fish Huts offers the choice of cozy on shore cottage rentals.

Surefire tactics for hauling in winter trout, panfish, pike, walleye and whitefish

Now that you’ve got your ice-fishing tackle box stuffed with all the essential lures, here are 21 bonus strategies to further boost your chances of scoring big this season. Ladies and gentlemen, start your augers!

1. Get out early
At first ice, you’ll find the fish relaxed and concentrated on prime spots-and eager to bite. That’s because they haven’t been hassled by anglers for several months and they’ve regrouped.

2. Find the fish

If you don’t have sonar, contour maps of the lake bottom can help. Or, if you’re fishing a lake that you also fish in the summer, you can return to some of your favourite shoals, humps and reefs.

3. Stay up high
When in doubt, it’s best to get your lure slightly above the fish rather than below them. That’s because fish eyes are positioned such that they’re usually looking up.

4. Spike your spoons
The way you attach a minnow head to the treblehook can make your spoons more effective. Instead of just running one of the tines through the lower jaw, slide the hook off the ring, then shove the eye through the minnow’s neck and out its mouth. That simple modification lets you flutter your spoon more naturally.

5. Change your hooks
You can vastly boost the odds of a successful hookset by removing the bottom treblehooks on all your swim baits and replacing them with one size larger premium, supersharp hooks such as Gamakatsu and VMC cone cuts.

6. Follow what works
If you notice that most of the hits are coming on the set line when you’re using a tip-up in one hole and jigging in another, that’s a hint to lay out two tip-ups and forget about jigging. The same rule applies when you catch a fish while jigging, which is more often the case.

7. Double your chances
Double jigging works for most fish, but I find it particularly useful for suspended lake trout. It’s even more deadly when you fish for competitive panfish, such as perch and crappies.

8. Get an edge
Regardless of where you’re fishing, remember that walleye and sauger eat other fish, especially perch, ciscoes and smelts—and that means they lie in ambush along the edges of moderately to sharply breaking structure.

9. Look up high
Winter walleye usually hang near the bottom, but keep your eyes glued to your sonar for high fliers. If you spot one, reel up quickly and stick your lure in front of its nose.

10. Keep on moving
Some lake trout anglers have a tendency to sit in one spot too long, when they really need to drill a hundred holes a day over a dozen or so different spots. This requires a lightweight, super-sharp ice auger, or you may collapse before noon.

11. Lighten things up
On the days trout play hard to get, clean their clocks by dropping a light 3/16- or 1/4-ounce jig.

12. Keep it down
Trout and walleye can be spooked by any racket on the ice, so keep surface noise to a minimum.

13. Work the sidelines
Pike position themselves along transition areas, so stay out of the weeds and instead target weed, rock and current edges, as well as main-lake drop-offs.

14. Never give up
When you miss a pike, don’t rush to check the bait. Instead, keep jigging for a few minutes. If you’re using a dead bait, jiggle it ever so gently. Usually the pike is staring at your bait or lure, and when you rock it, the fish will strike.

15. Make some noise
If the action slows down when I’m pike fishing, I’ll purposely run a snow machine around the area I’m fishing-even between the tip-ups- to try to get the pike moving and increase the chances they’ll see one of the baits.

16. Search every hole
In shallow, featureless panfish lakes, it’s important to fish each hole, because perch and crappies hug the bottom so tightly, your sonar sometimes can’t pick them up.

17. Watch out below
In larger panfish lakes, crappies usually hover 10 feet or more off the bottom in open water adjacent to structure. Find the crappies, and the perch will be clinging to the bottom in the same spot.

18. Spoon feed ‘em
If you find an active school of suspended, oversized slabs, they’ll sometimes (typically toward last ice) wallop a tiny spoon, such as a silver 1/7-ounce Williams Wabler.

19. Stay close together
Take advantage of the gregarious nature of panfish. Once you find one, you’ll find a bunch. So when you or your partner catches a fish or two, drill another hole right beside the productive one. You can even try to jig two lines in the same hole. As one angler reels in and unhooks a fish, the other lowers his line and catches another.

20. Offer something bigger
In most perch waters where the fish grow huge but are ignored, or when they’re excited, active and aggressive, I prefer bigger lures. My favourites include the W30 Williams Wabler (silver/gold) and the smallest Jigging Raps (which you normally wouldn’t use).

21. Let ‘em go
If you plan on releasing a fish, avoid exposing it to the ice-cold air for any longer than is necessary. You also shouldn’t drop the fish in the snow or lay it on the ice for lengthy periods. If possible, it’s best to release the fish without ever taking it out of the water.

Lake Simcoe, one of the larger inland Ontario lakes, offers an exceptional ice fishing experience with over 60 species of fish and unique ice fishing villages

SIMCOE, ON — Known as the ice fishing capital of Canada, Lake Simcoe is a bustle of activity in winter with seasonal ice fishing villages dotted across the lake, fishing huts and bungalows full with anglers from near and far and even the Great Canadian Ice Fishing Championship

each year.

Lake Simcoe is also the home to the Canadian Ice Fishing Championships February 19-20, 2011 with an estimated $20,000 in cash prizes to be awarded. Two person teams fish for 6 hours for two days and are awarded points based on the species and size of fish caught. The official host destination for the 2011 ice fishing championship is the Sutton Legion in Sutton West, Ontario.
