Skating, playing hockey, fishing or snowmobiling can be a favorite part of winter, but the ice you find outdoors is not always trustworthy. Outdoor ice can be dangerous. Every year, Canadians fall through it, and some do not make it out.

“Winter sports and activities are part of the Canadian identity, and many of those involve going on outdoor ice,” Lifesaving Society CAO Barbara Kusyanto said. “When you’re recreating this year, ice fishing or snowmobiling, make sure you put safety first.”

It is important to test the ice thickness to ensure that it is thick enough and strong enough.

Recommendations for ice thickness are based on clear, blue ice. White ice has air or snow in it and cannot be trusted. Remember to measure ice thickness in several locations. Recommended minimum ice thickness for new, clear, hard ice is:

3″ (7cm) or less-STAY OFF;?4″ (10cm) – ice fishing, walking, cross country skiing;?5″ (12cm) – one snowmobile or ATV?8″-12″ (20-30cm) – one car or small pickup?12″-15″ (30-38cm) – one medium truck (pickup or van)

The Lifesaving Society – Canada’s lifeguarding expert – is a charitable organization working to prevent drowning and water-related injury through its training programs, Water Smart public education, water-incident research, safety management services and lifesaving sport.

In accordance with current regulations and scientific advice, each person is allowed to catch a maximum of five groundfish per day of any type, with the exception of Atlantic halibut, Greenland shark, Atlantic wolffish, northern wolffish, spotted wolffish, shellfish and crustaceans. These species must be returned to the water.

To ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources and to allow the continuation of ice fishing activity in the future, fishers must abide by the regulations in force.

The Canadian Coast Guard strongly recommends that all hikers, fishers and snowmobilers leave the ice during icebreaking activities as shifting ice may create a danger for anyone in the area.

Please note that Canadian Coast Guard spring icebreaking operations on the Saguenay River will begin on or about March 12, 2011.

We need more than an attitude or a state of mind – we need careful planning and hard work.

One facet of the ever growing history of trout fishing is stream improvement  – the human contribution to increased carrying capacity, rate of growth, carryover quality, natural re-production and fishability of the water. In many instances, streams have been a sort of battleground between nature on the one side and men on the other – men who, in ignorance or indifference, have caused unnatural siltation as they were bent upon earning a living. In fact, practically every trout stream is in some state of man-caused deterioration.

Fortunately, however, there are other men – men who are interested in angling. These men have pitched in to correct this situation. Essentially their task has been, and is, a matter of redesigning the stream bed by control of the stream flow.

For generations, this science of stream reclamation has been refined by many minds and hands and has involved the expenditure of considerable time and money. Over the years, many creative ideas have issued from English river keepers, American fly fishermen and technicians of governmental agencies. Anglers of distinction have recorded some of the practices and part of the progress.

The purpose of this article is to assemble, to correlate, to evaluate data that as of now is scattered about in papers, journals and books and in heads.The reporting is by an intensely interested advocate of stream reclamation who has had the good fortunate to know the foremost American trout-stream engineers.

This open-V dam drives the flow down the center of the stream, and it maintains a clean gravel-and-rock bottom. The stones should protrude above the surface in low water only. When it’s built around pipes or flue liners, highly valuable overhead cover is added.

YOUNGSMAN BRUSHPILE. Whenever manpower or stones are lacking, this brush dam makes a good substitute. Short pieces of railroad track – or substantial iron bars – are anchored in concrete on each bank. The ends of a cable are clamped to the anchoring posts, leaving enough slack to allow the cable to droop in the water. Cut brush is then hooked onto the cable to provide cover.

RIPRAP on the bank will prevent erosion.

FOX HOLE AND BRUSHPILE. The cover that is provided by the tunnel, plus the brushpile, will convert any barren stretch into excellent holding and supporting water; also the open-end deflector will clean bottom at both extremities.

LARGE ROCK. A single large rock in a stream creates new hiding places and feeding stations.

SINGLE-WING WALLS. After the other dams and deflectors are built, the alternating right and left single-wing series can be planned. Such a bottom-cleaning series is a basic procedure.

MARINARO HOOK DEFLECTOR. Loose rocks that protrude above the surface in the design of a hook curving upstream will form the base of this wall. Bushes are then arranged over the rock structure for the purpose of providing cover.

HEWITT UNDERCUT DAM. The complete flow of water passes over the boards of this sloping dam, creating a flat on the upstream side which makes good holding and surface-feeding water. Under the hollow dam is thus developed the finest kind of overhead cover for the larger trout.

Here’s a quick and simple way to make a smoker and prepare fish in this succulent mode.

“Smoked fish!” Grunted one of my gourmet friends. “Bah! It takes a Norwegian to know how to smoke fish properly.”

With an Irish name like Burke, I’m not a Norwegian, but my grandmother lived on a farm in Minnesota, right in the middle of the biggest colony of Norwegians and Swedes in the country. As a boy I had spent many a summer on my grandmother’s farm, and I remembered a few of her tricks for country-smoking fish and meats.

I decided to build my own smoker. Not the big walk-in variety she had on her farm, but a small, portable job I could use right on my patio.

Besides having a craving for smoked fish, I am  a once-a-month fisherman, and when the luck was good, I hated to give most of my catch to the neighbors. I have a backyard barbecue grill complete with lid, but this was designed for charcoal broiling. It is used for cooking, not true smoking. To smoke fish or meat, you first soak it in brine and then place it in a closed box and let it mellow in gentle wafts of cool, fragrant woodsmoke. Keep the temperature to 150 degrees. Don’t cook it – smoke it.

First, I’ll explain in detail the type of smoker I built. Then I’ll give you my recipe – including some of my grandmother’s tricks of the trade, supplemented by a few of my own.

My first idea was to build a wooden box. Since low heat is the secret, there is little danger of a box catching fire. But of course proper preparation is still the secret behind a tasty finished product. Before smoking, soak the fish for eight to ten hours in brine solution. Then remove the fish, rinse in fresh water and dry.
