Robert Kristjanson, member of a Manitoba family that has been fishing commercially for more than 120 years said, “in my time I have never seen it as early.”

“In 1951 [the ice] went out very early but not this early,” the 78-year-old Kristjanson added.

Normally, ice fishing season on Lake Winnipeg’s southern basin would last until mid-April.

Kristjanson expressed worry that early ice out would allow commercial fishing to begin early, before fish have a chance to spawn. Usually, commercial fishing would not begin until mid-May.

Winter was abnormally mild in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba, albeit plenty cold enough for ice to form on Manitoba’s “great lake.”

Winnipeg climate data accessed by AccuWeather.com showed that the winter months of December through February had an average temperature of -9.6 degrees C (14.7 F), or 6.4 degrees C (11.5 F) above normal.

Record warmth followed in March, a month that saw Winnipeg set both its highest maximum temperature (23.9 degrees C on the 19th), and its highest monthly average reading.

Lake Winnipeg is about as big as Lake Erie, and its southern basin takes in a rather small fraction of the lake.

Manitoba Conservation said the warm temperatures have caused unsafe conditions on the ice, and they are deteriorating faster than normal.

The province has asked anyone venturing out on the ice to be extremely careful and only remove structures as long as conditions allow for safe removal.

Typically, March 31 is the last day for removal of the huts in southern Manitoba. Last Tuesday was the deadline for all ice fishing shacks to be removed from the Red River.

The province advised Thursday that all shacks should be removed from the ice in southern and central Manitoba as soon as possible, as long as it’s safe to do so.

Normally shacks can remain until March 31, but mild temperatures have cut the ice fishing

season short this year. Shacks were to be removed from the Red River by March 13.

Those who don’t remove their shacks could be issued a fine by Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship.

The ice-fishing enthusiasts were trapped on the two kilometer (1.2 mile) long breakaway piece of ice after it cut off from the mainland in strong winds, a police spokesman told public broadcaster CBC.

Five people fell into the frigid water of lake Simcoe from the ice and one was hospitalized, but police said none of the injuries were serious.

If you have a fish house or dark house on one of the many lakes of Northern Minnesota you have to take it down soon.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, ice-fishing shelters must be removed from waters in the northern half of Minnesota by midnight on March 19.

Removal dates are determined by an east-west line formed by U.S. Highway 10, east along Highway 34 to Minnesota Highway 200, east along Highway 200 to U.S. Highway 2 and east along Highway 2 to the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.

Fish houses in the southern half of Minnesota were to be off the ice by March 5 and houses on the Minnesota-Canada border waters have to be off by March 31.

Shelters may remain on the ice between midnight and one hour before sunrise after removal dates only if they are occupied or attended. Storing or leaving shelters on a public access is not allowed.

Unfortunately this winter was very mild here in southern ontario, so much so that we haven’t had any chance of getting out to do any ice fishing on the resident lakes.  In fact to actually have a shot at ice fishing this year you would have to travel north at least three hours to find ice sufficient enough to hold you safely.

When I do try setting up a day on the ice I make sure that the company we go with are a great group of people.  The last thing you want is to be stuck in a hut for 8 hours with someone who complains or whines non-stop.  My fishing buddies are a great group of individuals so I don’t have to worry to much about that.  My wife who sometimes comes out with us during the summer usually heads out for a day on the ice as well.

I usually decide what species I am interested in chasing then I do my research on the lakes, species, outfitters, price, etc…

Next I call my buddies and see who’s interested in heading out, then we decide which day we will go.

None of my group are very serious ice fishermen so we rent a nice heated hut and hope for the best.

I prefer using small minnows as well as Berkley Gulp minnows for our bait.

Here are a few pics from a previous outing.  Our target species was walleye and I ended up being the only one who caught one, even though it was a midget.

“After the success of last year’s first family fishing weekend, we want to continue to encourage people to try ice fishing as a healthy and enjoyable leisure activity during the winter,” said Mackintosh.  “This weekend is a great way to spend time with family and friends while taking advantage of our world‑class fishing across the province.”

From Feb. 18 to 20, anglers will be able to fish without a licence provincewide, except in national parks where a federal licence is still required.  The same conservation limits that apply to licensed fishing will remain in effect.  While summer Family Fishing Weekends have been offered since 1992, this is the second winter Family Fishing Weekend to be offered in Manitoba.

In recognition of the second winter fishing weekend, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is hosting an amateur photo contest to promote ice fishing as a fun family activity.

“We want families to capture the beauty of Manitoba’s winter wonderland with a camera and post the photos on our Facebook page by Feb. 24,” said Reid Woods, president of the Manitoba Wildlife Federation.  “Three random names will be drawn to win family gift packs valued at more than $125.”

Ice fishers are expected to ensure conditions are safe before venturing onto the ice.  It is also important to ensure someone knows where you are fishing.

That’s because his is the only ice fishing shack in front of the La Verendrye Boat Launch in Lac du Bonnet.

“I’ve been out fishing a couple of times. My son’s been out about five times,” Willoughby says. “The ice is about 12 inches thick. Fine to walk on, but I wouldn’t drive on it.”

The river is virtually deserted, an unusual site for January when it’s is usually peppered with ice shacks. Lack of snow and warm temperatures mean thin ice, and Willoughby worries that snow that’s fallen in recent days will melt and create slush.

“The other day there was slush all around the shack,” he says.

The province is warning the public to be careful on the ice and to avoid driving vehicles or snowmobiles on it.

“Due to the warm temperatures and high water levels in lakes, streams and swamps, we are asking people to be extremely careful as ice conditions can change dramatically,” Manitoba Conservation’s Ken Lucko said.

Willoughby says the fishing has been OK, but it’s nothing to write home about.

“The pickerel are biting, but very softly,” he says.

So far this year, there is still a lack of snow and no snowmobile trails have been opened in provincial parks.

The milder temperatures have also prevented the ground and water from freezing. Ice conditions are variable and riders are encouraged to drive carefully, use the proper equipment and make sure snow machines are well-maintained.
