Come summer or winter, the best place for a good catch of bass, pike, walleye, whitefish, and lake trout is the ‘Ice Fishing Capital of Canada’, Lake Simcoe. Located on Cooks Bay in the town of Keswick, a mere 45 minutes north from Toronto, Lake Simcoe is where anglers head during the winter ice fishing season for perch and pike. It doesn’t matter if you are a pro or just a rookie ‘hooked’ onto the sport of ice fishing, Lake Simcoe covers 744 sq. km stocked with over 60 species of fish. To add to it, there are many winter lodges and cottages in and around the lake, which is no wonder why it attracts the most anglers during winter than any other place in the province.
Fishing on hard water is the best way to beat the winter blues, more so when you have Lake Simcoe with the most productive hard water in southern Ontario. Most areas are covered by up to eighteen inches of ice with the southeastern side of the lake having the best conditions with open ice roads and thickest layers of ice. Georgina Island and Ducos Point are the popular spots along the southern stretch. Apart from pike and walleye, ice fishermen come to Lake Simcoe for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, whitefish, and lake trout. With any bait, it is easy to haul up a good catch of yellow perch. However, some of the other species are fussy, so don’t forget to bring along a variety of bait and ice fishing gear.
