With opening day of Maine’s ice-fishing season on most waters a mere two weeks away, Dylan Larose and Dennis Daniel were keeping close tabs on temperatures Saturday.

Larose is a bait retailer who manages Dag’s Bait Shop for his father, Marcel, in Auburn. Daniel owns Ellis Pond Variety in Roxbury.

Normally, both would be very busy ordering and selling bait and ice-fishing tackle this month, prior to the season opening on Jan. 1.

However, due to the lack of ice, Larose said he’s lost money and bait. Daniel said he has yet to call his bait dealer and take delivery of 200 dozen bait he ordered two weeks ago.

“I should be selling 200 dozen a week, bare minimum, this week and this is the beginning of fishing,” Larose said.

“Not as many people ice fish in December, because on the ponds and lakes it’s catch-and-release in the southern counties where we’re at,” he said. “So. I’ve missed out on 400 dozen bait sales plus the tackle, the hooks, the weights and everything that goes with it.”

Larose said he had lost $260 worth of bait in the past two days.

Daniel orders bait for anglers who primarily fish Ellis Pond, also known as Roxbury Pond. Last week, ice was 2 inches thick there. By Friday, it was gone. On Saturday morning, the ice-making cycle began anew.

“I’m just hoping that it freezes and I’ll call the (bait) guy and say, ‘Hey, OK, send it on up,’ but it’s just too chancy right now,” Daniel said.

Larose, who is starting his third winter selling bait and tackle this month, said bait wholesalers — the people who catch the bait — and bait retailers are hurting from the finicky weather.

Normally, early ice anglers hit the Androscoggin River in a cove at the Turner Boat Launch for monster pike of the 20-pound variety, he said.

Two years ago, he sold bait on Dec. 11 to a guy going there. Last year, he sold bait to a guy on Dec. 4.

“It’s still open water right now and I have yet to sell bait to a guy to go ice fishing up there this year and that’s how far behind we are,” Larose said.

“If we have ice, I’ll sell 200 dozen (bait) on Christmas Eve,” he said.

In fact, he’s anticipating just that and said he’ll have plenty of bait and be open Christmas morning. Daniel will also have bait aplenty.

By the week of Thanksgiving last year, Ellis Pond had ice from 3 to 5 inches thick, Daniel said.

By Saturday afternoon, he said poor ice had formed in the coves and to about 75 feet from shore by the boat launch.

“It’s what I would call junk ice,” Daniel said. “It’s all full of ripples and bumps. It’s very wavy, so I would say it’s very dangerous, even that first 75 feet. If we can get the right conditions, this thing is going to freeze, literally.”

To grow ice on Maine waters, it takes temperatures in the 20s to below zero and no wind, but it also depends on the size and depth of the body of water, Lt. Adam Gormely of the Maine Warden Service said Saturday.

“Water’s really probably the most difficult medium to change with temperature,” he said. “That’s why you see the bigger, deeper lakes, they don’t freeze as much, Sebago being a prime example.

“If we had a few zero-degree nights with no wind, we’d see some of the smaller ponds button up quick,” Gormely said. “So we could still very easily have ice for January. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities.”

The best way to test the ice is to take a chisel and step out onto the lake, one step at a time and chisel your hole, Gormely said.

“You’ve got to test the ice,” he said. “People always want to hear, ‘What’s the magic number? What’s safe to go on?’”

He said 4 inches of ice would probably support people, but the problem is that ice thickness could be 2 inches or less in other places on the same pond or lake.

“I don’t like 2 inches of ice,” Gormely said. “It would probably hold you, but I don’t like the ‘probably.’ I’ve got young boys who love to ice fish and I like to see 6 inches before we’re going fishing. That gives me some support.”

He cautioned anyone venturing out on the ice in the next few days as a cold spell sets in, saying winter hasn’t yet arrived.

“Weird thing is, this Halloween and this Thanksgiving were white,” Larose said. “You know we had such early indications of winter. Even the Farmers’ Almanac said there was going to be an early freeze. I burnt my Farmers’ Almanac. I threw it in the fire.”

You go to the bait store for minnows, hit the lake and drive on a plowed road, unload your gear and walk into a fish house with holes drilled and the heat on.

This scenario plays out on a daily basis across the state during the winter as fishing enthusiasts utilize services provided by resorts, outfitters, and bait suppliers.

But there’s a lot of work that goes into making your winter fishing experience possible long before you hit the ice. Those minnows just don’t show up in a tank, roads don’t plow themselves, and fish houses aren’t magically built and placed on the ice.

If you’re in the business of catering to winter fishermen there is no down time. Once the open water season starts to wind down preparation for the winter months begins.

Brian LaBore owns Lakeroad Lodge Motel on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, one of the state’s premier ice fishing destinations. Like most resort owners on the lake, LaBore has been busy in recent weeks preparing for the winter fishing season.

There are rooms to get cleaned, fish houses to repair and paint, and maintenance to complete on trucks for plowing roads and pulling those houses across the ice among other chores.

LaBore says the winter provides a good chunk of annual income for resorts at Lake of the Woods so there’s a lot of work that goes into preparing for the season and it all has to be done before that first angler of the ice fishing season arrives.

“A lot of people don’t realize what it takes to prepare for the ice fishing season – the time and costs it involves before anyone gets here,” LaBore said. “But that’s where we make our money so all of us bust our butts to make sure we’re ready.”

The upkeep to his fleet of fish houses alone takes countless hours. LaBore said that he’s very meticulous with his houses and makes sure they have a fresh coat of paint, cleaned inside and out, and are in working order before they get put to use on the lake.

Keep in mind that winter is a long season at Lake of the Woods. Since it borders Canada, walleye fishing is allowed through mid-April so that’s nearly five months of wear and tear on the houses as they’re moved from spot to spot across miles of frozen lake.

The thick skids under the fish houses, which allow them to be pulled easier, often have to be replaced by the start of a new season. There’s just no way of avoiding some type of maintenance on most of his fish houses from the previous year.

“The skids really get tore up and the houses get beat up because we drag them around all winter,” LaBore said. “You can’t do anything about it, except fix them before the new season starts.”

The same is true on his trucks and plows used to move the houses and keep roads open during the winter season. LaBore said work on them starts in the fall and continues all season due to the abuse they’re put through on a daily basis.

“It seems like there’s always work to be done on a truck,” he added. “That doesn’t end until the ice fishing season does.”

With the fish houses ready to go, LaBore has spent a lot of his time this week checking ice conditions. Before he allows anyone to hit the ice he makes sure it’s thick enough for travel.

That involves years of experience on what is sometimes questionable ice early in the season. But with fishermen wanting to come up this week, he wants to make sure the ice will support them.

If he doesn’t feel it’s safe, LaBore won’t let people use his roads. It’s a job he takes seriously. At this time of the year, it’s one of his most important and time consuming tasks as well.

“We check ice depths every day early in the season — we have to so nobody breaks through — it has to be done daily,” he said. “We typically stake the first road onto the lake and we have a bunch of guys that want to get on the ice but before they do we have to know it’s safe.”

At Mille Lacs Lake, resort owners such as Terry Thurmer of Terry’s Boat Harbor on the west side of the lake, begin preparing for the ice fishing season as soon as he pulls his launches and boats at the end of October.

With approximately 20 fish houses and five plow trucks to get ready, there isn’t much down time between early November and when his first house gets put on the lake. During a good year, when ice conditions allow, that’s usually around Christmas at Mille Lacs.

But Thurmer likes to have his equipment in working condition weeks before he uses it. He doesn’t want to deal with getting his fish houses and trucks fixed when people want to start fishing.

“You have to be ready to go as soon as the ice allows,” Thurmer said. “We start checking everything for the winter as soon as we can in the fall and there’s always something to do.”

But the work doesn’t end when people actually start showing up to fish. For Thurmer, the work intensifies as the season progresses, snow piles up and roads need to be maintained.

He estimates plowing about 40 miles of roads to the various hot spots throughout the lake and it’s not a one-time deal. Every time it snows or blows those roads have to be reopened.

The reason for having five trucks is simple — he says at some point one of them breaks down and you can’t stop plowing as a result. He has to keep as many of his trucks in operating order as possible throughout the winter.

That’s not cheap with gas prices as they are these days. He says that at best his trucks get two miles per gallon and it doesn’t take long to blow through 100 gallons of gas.

He also wants people to understand that’s why most resorts, including his, charge a small fee to use the roads they plow. Without that access fee, there wouldn’t be roads on most lakes, especially the bigger bodies of water such as Mille Lacs.

“Some people might not understand the cost involved in keeping those roads open,” he said. “If we didn’t charge people to use the roads I couldn’t afford to plow and I think most people know that and appreciate it.”

He says he doesn’t hear many complaints from people about paying the fee, usually between $8 or $10 depending on the resort and lake. In years with a lot of snow, utilizing those plowed roads might be the only option for getting on the lake.

In recent years, more and more anglers have purchased wheel-styled fish houses that they pull onto the lake. Many of them are big and would be impossible to get on a lake the size of Mille Lacs if resorts wouldn’t maintain a road system.

“It’s changed with the rental houses over the past 10 years because it seems like everyone has a wheel house now,” Thurmer said. “We have a lot more people using our roads with their own equipment rather than renting a house from us.”

A program designed to clean up the banks of the Red River could potentially run all winter if Operation Cleanup gets its way.

Operation Cleanup, which runs from May to the end of October each year, hoists around 40,000 pounds of garbage from the banks of the Red River annually. Program founder Rob Belanger, who also works a natural resource officer in St. Clements, is submitting a proposal to Manitoba Conservation to try and have the program operate throughout the winter months.

In a recent interview with the Journal, Belanger said awareness is greater than ever of the pollution problems that have plagued the Red River during the ice fishing season in recent years.

A regional meeting was held held last winter to gather ideas about how to cut down on scofflaws who litter, abandon their shacks in the spring, or break other rules like having open liquor.

About 200 people attended, and the majority said more enforcement by the RCMP and Manitoba Conservation was needed.

“The message is definitely getting out there,” Belanger says. “Anglers have the power to police themselves and they’re showing that. Everyone’s been working together and that’s great to see.”

Belanger started the program 11 years ago while working as an NRO in Selkirk. He says that during the course of his job, he was confronted with “huge amounts” of trash being left behind by irresponsible boaters, anglers and hikers along the river.

Belanger then decided to take action – approaching the owners of the property that had become a dumping ground to put together a program to help deal with the trash.

But he wants to go even further and see the program run all winter. The Red River in the winter is covered with hundreds of ice fishing shelters.

“It’s always a small group of anglers who ruin it for everyone else,” he says. “It’s a matter of getting the awareness out there and getting to the point where anglers are saying to each other ‘hey buddy, when you’re done fishing don’t forget to take your bucket with you.’”

While there is a diversity of ideas about what to do about littering, abandoned ice shacks, and other ice fishing violations, anglers seem to agree that something needs to change, because they don’t want a few scofflaws to spoil one of Manitoba’s favourite winter activities.

West St. Paul resident Frank Giancola said the garbage cans and porta-potties are a good idea and could be placed at a few main entrances to the prime ice fishing areas, but also worried people would mistreat them.

“I wouldn’t want to see them set on fire or vandalized,” he said.

Andre Desrosiers, a natural resource officer based in Selkirk, has experienced first-hand the garbage piles left by anglers on the Red River during the winter months. Last year there was far less trash left on the ice, but not because people aren’t littering as much.

In 2009 there were around 500 ice shacks set up on the river from Lockport to the mouth of Lake Winnipeg. Last year there were only just over 100.

“It was due mostly to bad ice,” Desrosiers says. “All the media attention played a role too no doubt. But people are still littering.”

Desrosiers said banning ice shacks is still an option if things get bad enough, but it’s an option the province doesn’t want to use as a weapon in its arsenal.

“One of the things we were told is that anglers want more enforcement out there. So that’s what we’re doing. We don’t want to have to force anyone’s hand. But people have to step up to the plate and be each other’s keeper.”

Desrosiers says more and more anglers are discovering Lake Winnipeg as an ice fishing destination, coming up from the northern U.S. And that means with more anglers expected to be out on the ice, the littering problem becomes an issue for everyone.

“It’s about everyone doing their part,” he adds.

And doing their part many anglers are. As a response to the issue, the Manitoba Ice Fishing Association was formed last year and is actively recruiting new members and encourages anyone interested to join them at their next general meeting on Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Petersfield Hotel.

Association chairman Arnold Weidl says the group has been very successful in getting the word out, and is making itself publicly visible by working with the province and other organizations to ensure the message is received.

“The mindset is totally changing,” Weidl says. “There’s a lot of work to be done, but this has really snowballed.”

The association has a number of raffles coming up and is doing everything it can, including placing trash bins out on the ice, to ensure anglers get the message about littering.

“We’re doing a massive amount of work and it’s definitely having an effect,” Weidl says.

QUEBEC CITY – Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announces that the groundfish ice fishing season on the Saguenay River will open on January 21, 2012, and close on March 4, 2012.

For the safety of those participating in ice fishing, DFO emphasizes that access to fishing sites is conditional on ice thickness in accordance with municipal regulations.

In accordance with current regulations and scientific advice, each person is allowed to catch a maximum of five groundfish per day of any type, with the exception of Atlantic halibut, Greenland shark, Atlantic wolffish, northern wolffish, spotted wolffish, shellfish and crustaceans. These species must be returned to the water.

To ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources and to allow the continuation of ice fishing activity in the future, fishers must abide by the regulations in force.

The Canadian Coast Guard strongly recommends that all hikers, fishers and snowmobilers leave the ice during icebreaking activities as shifting ice may create a danger for anyone in the area.

Please note that Canadian Coast Guard spring icebreaking operations on the Saguenay River will begin on or about March 12, 2011.

Are you utilizing every available strategy to ensure a successful trip that 1st time out on the ice this season? Keeping your summer fishing habits sharp will enable you to be more successful this winter season. Here are a variety of tips and tactics designed to help you have a more successful ice fishing season this year.

Start with a Lake You Frequent During the Summer Months

By starting out on a lake you are familiar with you go a long way to helping your success that first time out on the ice. Most often, in the early part of the ice fishing season, you probably will be walking out to your location. This is due to ice conditions at this time of year. If you decide to get out and fish in the late fall, use that lake as your first choice for your initial venture come winter. By doing this you will have a good idea where important structure is located and where the fish will be concentrated. If you own a GPS unit take it along on this fall fishing trip. The GPS is invaluable at saving waypoints where fish are concentrated. Generally speaking these holding points will be drop off areas, weed flats ,etc. By drilling a few holes in the area you pick, you will get a good idea as to the bottom structure.

Electronic Technology

Choosing an option in this field is better than ever. Basically you have a couple of choices when it comes to choosing an electronics for ice fishing, flasher, or liquid crystal.Which one you choose is totally up to you, but a flasher will give you a little faster reading. Utilize your equipment not only to highlight bottom structure, you can also use it to help you with more successful hook setting when the fish are biting more slowly. These views will also enable you to see how the target species is reacting to your presentation and will help you land more fish. While this strategy may not necessarily be true in your warm weather fishing season, it goes a long way to landing more fish in the winter time. By observing the fishes behaviour you can change your method of fishing them. Are the fish backing away as your lure descends to the bottom, are they aggressivly approaching on the way down or on the way up? Make sure you check every hole you drill before moving on. once you have checked all your holes and do not see any fish activity your choice is to drill more holes in the area or move to a new location. Would you stay in the same spot casting over and over again with no bites in the summer month?, probably not. The same applies during the winter. Flashers and viewers can be an important addition to your winter fishing arsenal. They can be your second set of eyes into the underwater world.

Come summer or winter, the best place for a good catch of bass, pike, walleye, whitefish, and lake trout is the ‘Ice Fishing Capital of Canada’, Lake Simcoe. Located on Cooks Bay in the town of Keswick, a mere 45 minutes north from Toronto, Lake Simcoe is where anglers head during the winter ice fishing season for perch and pike. It doesn’t matter if you are a pro or just a rookie ‘hooked’ onto the sport of ice fishing, Lake Simcoe covers 744 sq. km stocked with over 60 species of fish. To add to it, there are many winter lodges and cottages in and around the lake, which is no wonder why it attracts the most anglers during winter than any other place in the province.
Fishing on hard water is the best way to beat the winter blues, more so when you have Lake Simcoe with the most productive hard water in southern Ontario. Most areas are covered by up to eighteen inches of ice with the southeastern side of the lake having the best conditions with open ice roads and thickest layers of ice. Georgina Island and Ducos Point are the popular spots along the southern stretch. Apart from pike and walleye, ice fishermen come to Lake Simcoe for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, whitefish, and lake trout. With any bait, it is easy to haul up a good catch of yellow perch. However, some of the other species are fussy, so don’t forget to bring along a variety of bait and ice fishing gear. Speaking of gear, there are place to rent and buy gear such as an ice fishing rod or ice fishing house.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Quebec Region, announces that the groundfish ice fishing season on the Saguenay River will open on January 9th, 2010, and close on March 12th, 2010.

In accordance with the current regulations and scientific advice, each person is allowed to catch a maximum of 5 groundfish per day of any type, with the exception of halibut, which must be returned to the water.

To ensure the sustainability of this resource and to allow the continuation of this activity in the future, fishers must abide by the regulation in force.

Moreover, information on the catches provided to DFO must be precise in order to make it possible for the Department to obtain a clear picture of the biomass and to avoid a closure of this activity due to a lack of data coming from the winter fishing effort.

For the safety of those participating in ice fishing, DFO emphasizes that access to fishing sites is conditional on ice thickness in accordance with municipal regulations.

Further, the Coast Guard strongly recommends that all pedestrians, fishers and snowmobilers leave the ice during ice-breaking activities as shifting ice may create a real danger for anyone in the area.

Please note that Canadian Coast Guard spring icebreaking operations on the Saguenay River will begin on March 13th, 2010.

Remember the thrill and excitement of Ice Fishing back in Spring 08

You can expect more to come in 200 / 2010 in friendly Manitoba

Whether its fishing on the ice , in warm hut , with that Miller’s on hand , or with hot ice chocolate perhaps mixed with some Manitoba special courtesy of your Transcona fishing buddy Jadran Transcona nothing plain beats it.

Look forward to the 2009 / 2010 set of events . Lots of trophy pickerels and Walleye fish to come. Get ready for it.

Planning a trip north to enjoy some spectacular trout, walleye and pike fishing during the month of April? One of my top choices at this time of year are the lakes and rivers around The Pas, Manitoba.
Four years ago I had chance to enjoy the spectacular walleye fishing in the Saskatchewan River right in the town itself. On my trip I was able to get out for an evening with local angler Dale Kerwin. We unloaded our snowmobiles right in town and headed west to the mouth of the Carrot River, one of the numerous tributaries that supply water to the Saskatchewan. After drilling a series of holes right at the mouth dropped our lines. Soon I had some activity on my stationary line. A twitch of the rod tip indicated there was some interest. Taking the rod out of the holder, quick up and down of the jig produced a viscous strike. Soon a small northern pike stuck its snout out of the hole to be quickly released. Two more and a sucker followed in succession. Later that evening we were joined by two local anglers, who took us to one of their secret spots a short distance away. Sure enough as the sun started to cast long shadows the walleye became active. Ice fishing for walleye and pike is excellent in this section of the river at this time of year as more and more fish move upstream to the Carrot River, a main spawning area. Many of the fish are coming out of Cedar Lake. Genetic sampling has proven that the walleye from The Pas, Cedar Lake and Cross Bay are from the same pool. Cross Bay remains open at this time of year and more anglers each year are heading up to try the spectacular ice fishing for both pike and walleye on this huge bay.
Barbe Lake is about seventy kilometres north of The Pas, up Highway 10, past Rocky Lake then left at the Sturgeon Landing road for about five kilometres. There if you look really hard you see a small sign peaking out of the bush on the right side of the road “Barbe Lake”. Recently friend Dave Colibaba visited this spectacular trout fishery and wasn’t disappointed.
He and a friend caught some master angler rainbow trout as well as one brook trout by just walking onto the ice by the boat launch. The southwest end of the lake has extensive weed flats while the northwest end has deep water with sharper drop-offs. The middle of the lake is a good bet at this time of the year, providing a balance in structure.
Finally, don’t forget about mighty Clearwater Lake, just a short drive north and east of The Pas. At this time of the year you can get some of the best fishing of the entire year. Last time up north on the lake I headed out by snowmachine with Rick Hubbs twenty kilometers to the northern end.We were fishing a shallow bay that averaged seven metres in deep. Hubbs said this particular bay held a wide variety of shallow forage, attracting larger lake trout to patrol the bay. Drilling off the end of a shallow reef, on this day Rick and myself caught five nice lake trout right in the middle of the day. Unfortunately I had to leave in the early afternoon to get back to Winnipeg. Hubbs says the best action for lake trout at this time of year is from 6:30 to 7:30 in the evening. We caught lake trout on a variety of techniques both with stationary lines and with jigging small spoons tipped with a minnow.
