Visitors to Banff National Park on the Canadian Rockies train can experience ice fishing at nearby Spray Lake, just south of Canmore. Banff Fishing Unlimited (BFU) takes tourists out to one of their heated huts for an unequalled winter experience. The lake, which is located high in the Canadian Rockies, usually stays frozen from December to April, and anglers can enjoy a six to seven hour trip, with a cooked lunch caught from from the lake.

Experts and novices alike can appreciate the fishing at Spray Lake. With all equipment, winter gear and transportation provided, the guided trip from BFU makes this opportunity hard to pass by. Those who would rather cast their line into running waters can take one of the boats to Bow River as well, where the open waters offer some of Alberta’s best trout fishing year round.

For travelers on Canadian rail trips who would rather not fish, White Mountain Adventures offers the chance to go on an ice walk in Grotto Canyon, approximately 10 minutes east of Canmore. The guided tour will take visitors along an ice covered canyon floor to the “lost valley,” a beautiful and nearly inaccessible area.

Many of the winter activities in the Banff area require a guide, but equipment and other amenities are usually provided, making the exciting opportunities here well worth the trip.

Canadians are being reminded to be careful when dealing with ice.

Skating, playing hockey, fishing or snowmobiling can be a favorite part of winter, but the ice you find outdoors is not always trustworthy. Outdoor ice can be dangerous. Every year, Canadians fall through it, and some do not make it out.

“Winter sports and activities are part of the Canadian identity, and many of those involve going on outdoor ice,” Lifesaving Society CAO Barbara Kusyanto said. “When you’re recreating this year, ice fishing or snowmobiling, make sure you put safety first.”

It is important to test the ice thickness to ensure that it is thick enough and strong enough.

Recommendations for ice thickness are based on clear, blue ice. White ice has air or snow in it and cannot be trusted. Remember to measure ice thickness in several locations. Recommended minimum ice thickness for new, clear, hard ice is:

3″ (7cm) or less-STAY OFF;?4″ (10cm) – ice fishing, walking, cross country skiing;?5″ (12cm) – one snowmobile or ATV?8″-12″ (20-30cm) – one car or small pickup?12″-15″ (30-38cm) – one medium truck (pickup or van)

The Lifesaving Society – Canada’s lifeguarding expert – is a charitable organization working to prevent drowning and water-related injury through its training programs, Water Smart public education, water-incident research, safety management services and lifesaving sport.

QUEBEC CITY – Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announces that the groundfish ice fishing season on the Saguenay River will open on January 21, 2012, and close on March 4, 2012.

For the safety of those participating in ice fishing, DFO emphasizes that access to fishing sites is conditional on ice thickness in accordance with municipal regulations.

In accordance with current regulations and scientific advice, each person is allowed to catch a maximum of five groundfish per day of any type, with the exception of Atlantic halibut, Greenland shark, Atlantic wolffish, northern wolffish, spotted wolffish, shellfish and crustaceans. These species must be returned to the water.

To ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources and to allow the continuation of ice fishing activity in the future, fishers must abide by the regulations in force.

The Canadian Coast Guard strongly recommends that all hikers, fishers and snowmobilers leave the ice during icebreaking activities as shifting ice may create a danger for anyone in the area.

Please note that Canadian Coast Guard spring icebreaking operations on the Saguenay River will begin on or about March 12, 2011.

Attach a long cord to your sled. Not only does this make the sled easier to pull but should someone fall through the ice you can push the sled to them holding onto the line.

Carry two picks – spikes protruding from wooden hand holds – to help pull your way out if you should fall in.

If you should fall through the ice, once you spike your way out or are pulled out, don’t stand – roll across the ice in the direction you came.

Carry a throwable seat cushion. It’ll add to your seating comfort and give you something throw to someone fallen through.

Keep your auger covered. The blades are sharp, and can easily cut you, your dog or your children.

Spray vegetable oil on your auger and snowshoes. Snow won’t stick and you won’t cut yourself cleaning off the show.

Wear creepers. Slip on, or spiked shoes will keep you from slipping and falling on the ice.

Oxygen equals fish…

Too often while ice fishing pike, anglers head to the same location they had success in the spring and summer. While the pike may be at these locations for part of the winter, they most likely won’t be there for long. Pike are often on the move during the winter months as they seek pockets of water with high oxygen content.

Much like a blood-hound on the trail of a rabbit, northern pike have an amazing capacity for finding water with the richest quantity of oxygen. It doesn’t matter if they are in a lake or river, pike will consistently seek out water with the most plentiful oxygen. These are the locations you need to find in order to catch fish..

Think about the terrific weed beds that form during the spring and summer months. These locations are often havens for large and plentiful northern pike. But when the ice forms, these great summer-time locations can actually drive pike to seek out different waters.

The reason? As the underwater foliage decomposes over the winter it sucks oxygen out of the water. As the oxygen level decreases the pike are driven to seek out different locations. While ice fishing for pike you need to be attuned to this fact.

So where does one find these oxygen rich locations? Well, it is actually fairly straight forward. Those that have the most success pike fishing know that the oxygen levels are higher where a creek or river empties into a lake. As the fresh water enters the lake or reservoir it drives the oxygen content up in these locations. Find the oxygen and you will find the fish.

Ice fishing for pike is a terrific way to spend a winter day. Keep your location in mind and have a successful outing.

Perhaps the most common error anglers mistake is to use old, weak line. “Old” is a relative term. The line you used just yesterday may already be badly worn, particularly if your rod guides are scored and rough, if you’ve been casting among weeds or rocks that abrade the line, or if you’ve stretched the line repeatedly while fighting fish or loosening snags.

Monofilament spinning lines, which are used increasingly in bait casting, wear very rapidly. By far the strongest part of the monofilament is the thin outer skin, and when this layer is nicked or frayed only a fraction of the original strength remains. Of course it’s worn away partly by the action of repeated casting and reeling and by scraping through the line guides.

Monofilaments wear at different rates and in different ways. Some fray; others begin to kink or twist. Still others become covered with a fine white powder, indicating the skin is deteriorating from exposure to air and sun. When a monofilament loses its shine, when the finish takes on a dull, scored appearance, it is usually time to change. A good rule of thumb is to wind on new monofilament after two days of fishing. Using old lines is false economy. Too often anglers empty their wallets on lodging, travel, and guide service only to see the trip ruined by rotten lines.

Braided nylon lines of the type usually used in bait casting don’t wear as rapidly. Still they should be checked frequently while you’re fishing. Watch for tiny frayed fibers and cut back the first few feet of line frequently.

While you’re checking line look very closely at the point, barb and bend of your hooks. A snag, a fish, or repeated scraping along the bottom can bend or break the point. Carry an inexpensive hone in your tackle box and touch up your hooks frequently. It’s also a good idea to check a new lure before using it.

What do you reckon of when you hear the words “Ice Fishing”? For many people ice fishing brings to mind a winter pursuit enjoyed by those in cottage country far away from the huge city. I thought the same, until yesterday when I had the chance to learn more about an ice fishing festival in our own backyard: The Fantastic Georgina Ice Fishing Derby.

This derby, considered to be the largest its kind in North America, has the town of Georgina claiming the title, “Ice Fishing Capital of Canada”. The derby makes use of Lake Simcoe to host a remarkable 2 week event, kicking off January 29th and wrapping up this Sunday with cash prizes to be awarded to the biggest catches.

What is unique about the derby is that it is a fishing event that the whole family, fishing buddies and couples can delight in. You can fish anywhere on Lake Simcoe for up to fourteen days, from sun up until dark. getting involved is simple – just buy 14-day ticket and go fishing on Lake Simcoe, and make use of the ice, your personal shelters or a commercially rented fish hut.

Even if you are not a fishing enthusiast (I’ve never fished in summer let alone winter!) not only are the village of ice huts on Lake Simcoe a site to see, but you also may catch a glimpse of a kiteboarder making use of the frozen surface. one of the best vantage points is from Willow Beach Conservation Area, where you can see a rainbow of different multi coloured huts.
