Visitors to Banff National Park on the Canadian Rockies train can experience ice fishing at nearby Spray Lake, just south of Canmore. Banff Fishing Unlimited (BFU) takes tourists out to one of their heated huts for an unequalled winter experience. The lake, which is located high in the Canadian Rockies, usually stays frozen from December to April, and anglers can enjoy a six to seven hour trip, with a cooked lunch caught from from the lake.

Experts and novices alike can appreciate the fishing at Spray Lake. With all equipment, winter gear and transportation provided, the guided trip from BFU makes this opportunity hard to pass by. Those who would rather cast their line into running waters can take one of the boats to Bow River as well, where the open waters offer some of Alberta’s best trout fishing year round.

For travelers on Canadian rail trips who would rather not fish, White Mountain Adventures offers the chance to go on an ice walk in Grotto Canyon, approximately 10 minutes east of Canmore. The guided tour will take visitors along an ice covered canyon floor to the “lost valley,” a beautiful and nearly inaccessible area.

Many of the winter activities in the Banff area require a guide, but equipment and other amenities are usually provided, making the exciting opportunities here well worth the trip.

Canadians are being reminded to be careful when dealing with ice.

Skating, playing hockey, fishing or snowmobiling can be a favorite part of winter, but the ice you find outdoors is not always trustworthy. Outdoor ice can be dangerous. Every year, Canadians fall through it, and some do not make it out.

“Winter sports and activities are part of the Canadian identity, and many of those involve going on outdoor ice,” Lifesaving Society CAO Barbara Kusyanto said. “When you’re recreating this year, ice fishing or snowmobiling, make sure you put safety first.”

It is important to test the ice thickness to ensure that it is thick enough and strong enough.

Recommendations for ice thickness are based on clear, blue ice. White ice has air or snow in it and cannot be trusted. Remember to measure ice thickness in several locations. Recommended minimum ice thickness for new, clear, hard ice is:

3″ (7cm) or less-STAY OFF;?4″ (10cm) – ice fishing, walking, cross country skiing;?5″ (12cm) – one snowmobile or ATV?8″-12″ (20-30cm) – one car or small pickup?12″-15″ (30-38cm) – one medium truck (pickup or van)

The Lifesaving Society – Canada’s lifeguarding expert – is a charitable organization working to prevent drowning and water-related injury through its training programs, Water Smart public education, water-incident research, safety management services and lifesaving sport.

The cold temperatures of the past week have insured safe travel on all of the lakes in the Copper River Basin. And good ice means good fishing. Lake trout are the primary target for most anglers in this area. These trout can reach 20 pounds and better; the state record is 47 pounds. A fish more than 15 pounds is usually good for a story, especially if you try to get it through an eight-inch auger hole out of 20 feet of water. Lake trout abundance in Alaska varies considerably from one water body to the next. Generally speaking, the smaller lakes have a greater quantity of fish, while Crosswind Lake, Paxson Lake and Swede Lake are generally known for big trout. Fielding, Summit and the Lake Louise system also produce plenty of larger fish. Several of the small lakes along the Denali Highway have population estimates of nine fish per acre, while Paxson Lake produces just more one fish per acre.

However, last winter a trout nearly 30 pounds was caught at Paxson, while you would be lucky to get a five-pound fish in the majority of the lesser systems. Lake trout can be fished by a variety of means. Spoons, such as daredevils and Kamloops, work well. A relatively active red-and-white or chartreuse lure in 12 to 20 feet of water will usually get results. A larger presentation, such as a halibut jig or light-colored buck-tail, generally will produce larger fish. To target these fish, work your rig slowly and fish water as shallow as six feet, especially later in the season. Bait, such as herring or whitefish, in conjunction with a lure, is also effective, but first, check the regulations for the lake you intend to fish — many have bait and lure restrictions. Anglers will have the greatest success between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. during the winter months.

Good quality line is also a must. There is significant wear and tear if you have a big fish running with a lure in shallow water. That wear can be minimized somewhat by feathering the bottom edges of your auger hole to make it less abrasive. I prefer a disappearing mono-filament, such as Trilene, at about 20-pound test. A portable ice fishing house is a plus. A good house will allow you to be out in the wind at minus 20 in relative comfort. A sunflower head on a small propane bottle will get your coat off and possibly even the kids in to fish with you. An 18-inch square hole flared to be a couple of feet wide at the bottom will give a lot of visibility and allow for lighter tackle. I once had a trout more than 20 pounds come up into the hole after my jig. Of course, he got away. Lake trout are a long-lived species. Some have been recorded at 50 years of age. Most don’t spawn until they are more than 7 years old and even then some of the fish may be less than 18 inches in length. In some water bodies, sexual maturity may take 14 years. Lake trout spawn in September or early October. The exact timing is triggered by water temperature. Their growth rate is still a matter of conjecture despite being studied near to death in water systems throughout Alaska and Canada. One fish tagged in Paxson Lake grew only a half-inch in nine years! As a rule, a 20-inch fish will be about 10 years old, though some fish will never get much bigger, even if they live beyond 30. Because of the slow recruitment, catch limits are relatively small. There is a one- or two-fish limit in the majority of roadside lakes. Catch and release is an effective conservation tool since many of the fish taken through the ice are caught in the upper jaw. They are relatively easy to turn back unharmed if not removed from the water. Lake trout feed on other fish, water bugs and snails.

Local knowledge will tell you that the snail-eaters stay small, have orange flesh and taste better. There are no real hard facts to substantiate this, but check stomach contents of those fish that have yellowish flesh and visible fat on the inside of the body cavity and you will find them full of whitefish or salmon smolt. Lakers can be cooked in a number of ways — broiled, baked or fried. Cut them in half-inch squares, boil them for three minutes, add cooked potatoes and celery, plus a bit of milk and you will have a delicious fish soup. Use paper bowls or plates and there aren’t even dishes to wash — and that gives you a shot at going fishing again soon.http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/11/21/1916260/cold-weather-equals-safe-travel.html

Stop-go retrieves are particularly effective with surface lures. Usually it’s best to fish these baits slowly and with long pauses. What’s most important is to keep the line nearly taut when the lure is at rest. The bait usually drifts toward you, and if slack develops – even a little slack – you won’t be able to hook a striking fish. This simple detail explains why anglers miss so many surface hits. By the time the fisherman jerks up the slack the fish has already spit the bait out.

We all (I’m guilty sometimes too) tend to reel at a steady, monotonous pace. You’ve got to concentrate on working the lure like a live minnow, frog or other critter. Alternate rapid reeling with slow, and experiment with rod-tip action until you find a pattern which gets strikes.

Ice fishing lake trout can be a challenging affair for those who don’t understand the tendencies of this large fish. There are typical patterns the trout will follow throughout the winter, and you need to pay attention. Know their actions and be ready for a busy day on the ice.

Lake trout change locations during the winter as much or more than any other freshwater species. Trying to understand their underwater tendencies is what most anglers have a difficult time with.

Typically when the trout find a good feeding location, they will remain there until the food supply has been exhausted. Often times you will find them at a variety of suspended depths rather than simply on the bottom. This is an important element to keep in mind while you experiment with presentations and locations.

Lake trout typically see their prey much better above them than below. Generally pounding your jig off of the bottom of the lake floor may prove to be fruitless. An aggressive lake trout will rise to intercept your lure from as much as 40 feet below. This is the action you are looking for.

But don’t limit yourself to just one depth in the water column. There are times when lake trout will be on the bottom feeding on deadbait. You don’t want to miss these potential trophy fish.

While ice fishing lake trout, start with your jig just a few feet off of the bottom. Work this depth for a few minutes. If you have no luck, bring it up ten or fifteen feet and work that depth for a short period. If no trout, bring the jig up to a shallower depth and work that area. Continue this pattern until you nail one. This way you will scan the whole water column and understand where the fish are feeding. Trout have been caught at a 20 foot depth while fishing in 70 feet of water. So keep an open mind.

Ice fishing equipment for lake trout is straight forward. You will need a good ice fishing rod with at least 15 pound test. Don’t forget a leader. A variety of jig sizes is nice, but a large fluorescent or bright yellow jig always seems to work best. Make sure you have some variety with you.

Often trout will hit your jig while it descends. So be prepared. You may have one on before you know it. Ice fishing lake trout is a terrific way to spend a winter day. This species can grow to be well into the 40 pound range and make for an unbelievable battle through the ice. Be prepared and be smart. You could land the fish of a lifetime.

The future of trout angling depends on what we do to improve our streams today. We need more than an attitude or a state of mind – we need careful planning and hard work.

One facet of the ever growing history of trout fishing is stream improvement – the human contribution to increased carrying capacity, rate of growth, carryover quality, natural re-production and fishability of the water. In many instances, streams have been a sort of battleground between nature on the one side and men on the other – men who, in ignorance or indifference, have caused unnatural siltation as they were bent upon earning a living. In fact, practically every trout stream is in some state of man-caused deterioration.

Fortunately, however, there are other men – men who are interested in angling. These men have pitched in to correct this situation. Essentially their task has been, and is, a matter of redesigning the stream bed by control of the stream flow.

For generations, this science of stream reclamation has been refined by many minds and hands and has involved the expenditure of considerable time and money. Over the years, many creative ideas have issued from English river keepers, American fly fishermen and technicians of governmental agencies. Anglers of distinction have recorded some of the practices and part of the progress.

The purpose of this article is to assemble, to correlate, to evaluate data that as of now is scattered about in papers, journals and books and in heads. The reporting is by an intensely interested advocate of stream reclamation who has had the good fortunate to know the foremost American trout-stream engineers.

J.W. Hills in his classic, River Keeper, wrote about the efforts of William J. Lunn, for 45 years the keeper for the famous Houghton Trout Club on the River Test in the Hampshire sector of southern England.
