Ice fishing can be fun. Erect a shelter of some sort and spend the day fishing for trout, walleye, bass, perch, burbot and any other finned creature available in Columbia Basin waters.

Back in the Midwest, where the temperatures drop to well below zero for long periods of time, entire villages of ice huts spring up. Anglers spend days, if not weeks, in these villages. The more elaborate ones have plowed and named streets.

The huts are as fancy as the owner’s imagination and depth of pocketbook allow.

Although it is possible to safely ice fish in the Basin, the ice doesn’t get thick enough to satisfy us. Dennis note: The only time I felt safe on ice while fishing was during a trip to Canada. The ice was 2- to 3-feet thick and we reached the ice huts in vehicles. It was a wonderful experience and a lot of fun. If the ice reached a depth of at least 12 inches of around here, we would be on the ice with the rest of the anglers.

Local lakes and ponds are beginning to freeze with the current cold weather. Fish and wildlife doesn’t measure ice on lakes, so anglers are on their own. However, they offer some tips to consider when heading out for an ice-fishing trip: Don’t fish alone. Let others know exactly where you and your fishing partners are going and when you plan to return.

Keep fishing holes small and few. When drilling fishing holes with an ice auger, keep the diameter under eight inches. Bigger holes are not necessary to land fish and can create a safety hazard for others.

Watch your step. Avoid ice fishing near feeder streams or known springs; brush, logs, plants or docks. Also stay away from multiple ice cracks or ice that is popping or otherwise audible, plus and dark-colored ice that may be weak.

Spread out. Too many people congregated in one area may be more than the ice can safely support. Disperse weight and fishing holes.

Be prepared for weather conditions. Dress in layers and wear thermal underwear, fleece or wool, and wind and waterproof outerwear, especially for feet, hands and head. Take extra clothes, food, water, sand for traction, and a sled for easy on-ice transport of all equipment.

Be prepared for emergencies. Carry equipment such as ice picks or awls, rope, and personal flotation devices. Also pack a first-aid kit and matches for starting a fire.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers the following guide for traveling on ice: 2 inches or less, stay off; 4 inches, ice fishing or other activities on foot; 5 inches, snowmobile or ATV travel; 8 inches to 12 inches, car or small pickup travel; 12 inches to 15 inches, medium truck travel.

Remember that these thicknesses are merely guidelines for new, clear, solid ice. Many factors other than thickness can cause ice to be unsafe. White ice, sometimes called snow ice, is only about one-half as strong as new clear ice so the above thicknesses should be doubled.

The cold temperatures of the past week have insured safe travel on all of the lakes in the Copper River Basin. And good ice means good fishing. Lake trout are the primary target for most anglers in this area. These trout can reach 20 pounds and better; the state record is 47 pounds. A fish more than 15 pounds is usually good for a story, especially if you try to get it through an eight-inch auger hole out of 20 feet of water. Lake trout abundance in Alaska varies considerably from one water body to the next. Generally speaking, the smaller lakes have a greater quantity of fish, while Crosswind Lake, Paxson Lake and Swede Lake are generally known for big trout. Fielding, Summit and the Lake Louise system also produce plenty of larger fish. Several of the small lakes along the Denali Highway have population estimates of nine fish per acre, while Paxson Lake produces just more one fish per acre.

However, last winter a trout nearly 30 pounds was caught at Paxson, while you would be lucky to get a five-pound fish in the majority of the lesser systems. Lake trout can be fished by a variety of means. Spoons, such as daredevils and Kamloops, work well. A relatively active red-and-white or chartreuse lure in 12 to 20 feet of water will usually get results. A larger presentation, such as a halibut jig or light-colored buck-tail, generally will produce larger fish. To target these fish, work your rig slowly and fish water as shallow as six feet, especially later in the season. Bait, such as herring or whitefish, in conjunction with a lure, is also effective, but first, check the regulations for the lake you intend to fish — many have bait and lure restrictions. Anglers will have the greatest success between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. during the winter months.

Good quality line is also a must. There is significant wear and tear if you have a big fish running with a lure in shallow water. That wear can be minimized somewhat by feathering the bottom edges of your auger hole to make it less abrasive. I prefer a disappearing mono-filament, such as Trilene, at about 20-pound test. A portable ice fishing house is a plus. A good house will allow you to be out in the wind at minus 20 in relative comfort. A sunflower head on a small propane bottle will get your coat off and possibly even the kids in to fish with you. An 18-inch square hole flared to be a couple of feet wide at the bottom will give a lot of visibility and allow for lighter tackle. I once had a trout more than 20 pounds come up into the hole after my jig. Of course, he got away. Lake trout are a long-lived species. Some have been recorded at 50 years of age. Most don’t spawn until they are more than 7 years old and even then some of the fish may be less than 18 inches in length. In some water bodies, sexual maturity may take 14 years. Lake trout spawn in September or early October. The exact timing is triggered by water temperature. Their growth rate is still a matter of conjecture despite being studied near to death in water systems throughout Alaska and Canada. One fish tagged in Paxson Lake grew only a half-inch in nine years! As a rule, a 20-inch fish will be about 10 years old, though some fish will never get much bigger, even if they live beyond 30. Because of the slow recruitment, catch limits are relatively small. There is a one- or two-fish limit in the majority of roadside lakes. Catch and release is an effective conservation tool since many of the fish taken through the ice are caught in the upper jaw. They are relatively easy to turn back unharmed if not removed from the water. Lake trout feed on other fish, water bugs and snails.

Local knowledge will tell you that the snail-eaters stay small, have orange flesh and taste better. There are no real hard facts to substantiate this, but check stomach contents of those fish that have yellowish flesh and visible fat on the inside of the body cavity and you will find them full of whitefish or salmon smolt. Lakers can be cooked in a number of ways — broiled, baked or fried. Cut them in half-inch squares, boil them for three minutes, add cooked potatoes and celery, plus a bit of milk and you will have a delicious fish soup. Use paper bowls or plates and there aren’t even dishes to wash — and that gives you a shot at going fishing again soon.http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/11/21/1916260/cold-weather-equals-safe-travel.html

Ice fishing is a great way to take advantage of the cold weather and have fun. Unfortunately, some important prep work is involved, especially if you’re new to the sport.

Planning an ice fishing trip requires purchasing the right clothes, obtaining the proper licensing, buying the gear, and picking the right spot and day.

Equipment

For a first-time ice fishing trip the, cost will run at least $200 dollars, but probably closer to $300. Fortunately, you’ll get you’re moneys worth, especially if you plan on making multiple ice fishing trips because you can reuse most of the equipment. Chances are you already have some of the required equipment, especially if you live in a colder climate.

Bring a tackle box with lines, reels, lures and rods. An auger is also an absolute necessity. A 6-inch auger is all that is required, unless you wish to put in the extra effort to drill a larger hole. Some ice fishers prefer to use spuds, which are cheaper than hand-held augers. Some larger tools will also be needed for your trip, including a sled, seats, ice picks and a rope. A bucket for the fish and a metal tin are two more essential items for your ice fishing trip.

It goes without saying, you should dress warmly for ice fishing. Because ice fishing is a sedentary activity, you should bring extra clothes. Good shoes (or boots), a warm hat and gloves are very important.

Safety

Prior to your trip, check the thickness of the ice. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recommends that the ice be at least 3 inches thick for two people. Always choose clear ice over non moving waters. To identify good ice fishing waters in the area where you plan to fish, contact the DEC Regional Fisheries Office for your area.

Licensing

Like regular fishing, ice fishing requires a license in the United States and Canada. Regulations vary from each county within a U.S state. For specific county regulations, check YOUR states Department of Environmental Conservation. Regulations generally limit the amount of anglers and lines a person can have.

Ice fishing can be an enjoyable outing for you or the whole family but to make it successful there are a few ice fishing tips and tricks you should know. If you are a newcomer to ice fishing there are lots of ways you can improve your knowledge to make your ice fishing trip all that it can be. Some of these are necessary while others can be useful to add to your enjoyment.

Clothing

When you are ice fishing dressing properly for cold weather is a necessity. Start with thermal underwear followed by insulated fleece, wool or something warm and finish your outerwear with a warm windproof jacket and pants. Make sure your jacket has a hood it is very likely you will need it. Take extra clothing just in case you get wet.

Kitty litter

Take a small bag of kitty litter with you. This is great for sprinkling around your fish hole to give you better traction as you fish. Excitement usually comes when you catch a fish and without traction you could slip and your prize fish is gone.

Safety

Safety should be always kept in mind when you go ice fishing. Take things like a first aid kit and rope with you just in case there is a problem. If you are with someone else ice fishing and they fall in a rope can save their life. Don’t go on ice that is less than four inches thick.

Move your line

Most fishermen just move their line up and down in the fish hole. To increase your chances of catching a fish let your line hang down the hole and take your fingers and twirl your line gently. You can also move your line from one side of the hole to the other. This all helps in getting the fish interested.

Look down the fish hole

This may seem silly but if you lie on the ice and look down the hole you can see when the fish are taking the bait which increases your chance of catching the fish. Your objective is to catch fish no matter what it takes.

The line

When you are ice fishing use the proper test line. Some lines are so fine and hold so much stretch it is hard to tell when a fish bites. Using the correct line can help to ensure your catch of fish.

Ice fishing can be loads of fun not to mention the sweet taste of fresh fish in the pan at supper time. There are tips and tricks to everything you do and this is no less for fishing. Sometimes ice fishing tips and tricks can make the difference with coming home with fish or leaving them in the lake.

OTTUMWA — With weather like what is currently in place in Iowa, it isn’t the time most people think about water activities.

But at least two species are focusing on that right now.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the cold weather is bringing bald eagles back into the state from their northern grounds. It is also drawing people onto lakes as ice fishing becomes possible.

Doug Harr, the department’s wildlife diversity coordinator for non-game animals, said experts expect a large number of eagles this year.

“Around 2,300 pairs of eagles were reported in Minnesota this summer, and Canada has even more,” Harr said. “As harsh weather forces birds south, Iowa becomes a winter destination as eagles collect around open fishing waters.”

Harr specifically cited the Des Moines River and Mississippi River as popular spots for the visiting eagles.

Ottumwa eagle watchers benefit from the migration. When colder air arrives, it freezes most surface water in the area. But the hydro dam in downtown creates an area of open water that looks like a buffet line to migrating eagles.

And the colder it gets, the more eagles will likely arrive.

“As fast as the big waters are currently freezing to our north, I’d expect to see a huge influx of bald eagles move into Iowa during the next few days,” Harr said. “Most of these birds are coming straight down the chute from Minnesota and Canada, and viewing opportunities are occurring statewide.”

Eagles aren’t the only ones watching the weather.

Ice fishing is only possible after the temperatures take a winter plunge. Last week’s snow was actually bad news for those enthusiasts. The snow insulates the ice, which means it does not grow thicker as quickly as if it was exposed.

The basic guidelines from the DNR warn anglers to stay off ice if it is less than 2 inches thick. Two inches can support a single person under good conditions. Three inches of ice can support a group if the people spread out and four inches of ice supports general use. The DNR says only ice in the northern two-thirds of Iowa is currently thick enough for ice fishing.

Even if the ice is thick in one part of the surface, it doesn’t guarantee thickness elsewhere.

“Ice thickness is not uniform on any body of water and there is no such thing as safe ice. There is always risk associated with going out on ice,” said Mick Klemesrud of the DNR.

Still, experts warn that even experienced ice fishermen should pack emergency items in case of an accident. The DNR recommends bringing ice picks and 50 feet of rope. Inflatable cushions can keep anglers from sitting on the ice while also providing an emergency float should someone break through.

Ask a weather scientist why it’s so damn cold today and you’ll get two answers, both of them equally valid. The first is a scientific rationale involving high-pressure systems and advection and whatnot. And the second is that San Franciscans are wussies.

We told you they were both valid.

Let’s start with the science. Start with cold air — Professor Norman Miller, a staff scientist specializing in climate science at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Dave Reynolds, the Bay Area National Weather Service forecast office, differed some on where the cold air originated. Miller mentioned the Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands while Reynolds pinpointed Northwest Canada. Either way, it’s a place where cold air is as ubiquitous as ice fishing, hockey, and synonyms for snow.

In any event, the cool air up north developed into a low-pressure system to the point where, Miller notes, it “dropped down along the planetary wave weather travels on. What we’re seeing here is called the ‘polar jet stream.’” This is where advection comes in. The cold air reached the Bay Area not long ago — but didn’t deluge us immediately. A more temperate high-pressure system kept the icy barbarians at the gate for several days. But when the high-pressure system moved on, the cold weather descended upon us rapidly. It’s a bit like teenagers crashing a bar the moment the bouncer goes out for his smoke break.

So there you go. But both Miller and Reynolds noted that it’s not that cold.

“It’s nothing out of the ordinary. I live in the Berkeley Hills, and in the last 15 years I’ve seen this amount of snow in the morning at least six times,” says Miller. “We’re spoiled here. Every time the weather gets outside a narrow little temperature range, all of the sudden we find ourselves shaking in our boots.”

Reynolds, based in Monterey, notes that he’s sure some record lows have been set for this date — “But this is not an extreme cold outbreak. It’s not an unusual situation to occur at this time here in the Bay Area.”

But, yes, it’s nippy. Reynolds is a born-and-raised Bay Area native and he’s not used to this (and, he notes, he’s very pleased it will likely warm up come Thursday). Miller is an East Coast guy. But he’s been in the Bay Area for quite some time. “Yesterday I was hesitant to do certain outdoor sports. It was too cold for me,” he admitted. “I opted to sit in the hot tub instead.”
