Residents of Arctic Bay awoke to a strange sight above the hamlet last week.
OnĀ Jan 2 at about 7 a.m. a bright light streaked across the sky, leaving a trail of smoke behind it.
While most residents only caught its tail end, “one person actually saw it, and from what he was saying, the whole community was lit up as it passed,” said Joeli Qamanirq, the hamlet’s SAO. “That was the first time that ever happened in the community.”
Some Ikpiarjungmiut thought at first that it could be a fallen American spy satellite, according to Qamanirq.
A Greenlandic newspaper reported a similar occurrence on the same day.
According to the Semitsiaq article, the head of the Steno Museum planetarium believed it to be a meteor, which likely landed someplace in Northern Canada.
