Heat wave continues, high of nine expected

WINNIPEG – The November heat wave continues. Sunshine and above-normal temperatures are in the forecast for the entire week.

Environment Canada is calling for a high today of 9 C, with a low tonight of 1.

More of the same is in the forecast for Tuesday.

Environment Canada is predicting that the high will gradually slide downward as the week progresses and says there is a 30 per cent chance of flurries by Sunday.

But until then, there’s nothing but sunny skies.

Winnipeggers have been living in one of the country’s hot spots for days this month.

That’s right: Winnipeg, the city that normally sees the mercury hit a high of only -1 C — and has even seen the dumping of 35.2 cm of snow during 11 hours on Nov. 7 and 8, 1986 — is basking in a November heat wave with barely any precipitation.

Environment Canada meteorologist Dale Marciski said the mean temperature of 2.5 C so far this month is a far cry from the normal -5.3 C.

“But we haven’t broken any records,” Marciski said. “So far it has just been warm.”

The country’s weather guru, David Phillips, said most Canadians could be basking in nice winter weather because it’s an El Niño year, with winds from an abnormal warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean affecting our temperatures.

Phillips, hearing that a Winnipegger quickly broke a sweat kayaking on Lake Winnipeg last Wednesday, said, “Kayaking? Come on, it should almost be ice fishing at this time.”

But, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end; Phillips said even with an El Niño, Canadians will still have winter.

“We are the second-coldest country in the world,” he said.
