Anglers few and far between

Ron Willoughby of River Hills is a lonely man these days.
That’s because his is the only ice fishing shack in front of the La Verendrye Boat Launch in Lac du Bonnet.
“I’ve been out fishing a couple of times. My son’s been out about five times,” Willoughby says. “The ice is about 12 inches thick. Fine to walk on, but I wouldn’t drive on it.”
The river is virtually deserted, an unusual site for January when it’s is usually peppered with ice shacks. Lack of snow and warm temperatures mean thin ice, and Willoughby worries that snow that’s fallen in recent days will melt and create slush.
“The other day there was slush all around the shack,” he says.
The province is warning the public to be careful on the ice and to avoid driving vehicles or snowmobiles on it.
“Due to the warm temperatures and high water levels in lakes, streams and swamps, we are asking people to be extremely careful as ice conditions can change dramatically,” Manitoba Conservation’s Ken Lucko said.
Willoughby says the fishing has been OK, but it’s nothing to write home about.
“The pickerel are biting, but very softly,” he says.
So far this year, there is still a lack of snow and no snowmobile trails have been opened in provincial parks.
The milder temperatures have also prevented the ground and water from freezing. Ice conditions are variable and riders are encouraged to drive carefully, use the proper equipment and make sure snow machines are well-maintained.
